What I want:
Program that rips, removes macrovision, compresses, and burns.

What I used:
Mactheripper 2.6, Shinkit, Toast

Issue: For some reason Mactheripper doesn't work any longer. A few years back, it just stopped being able to rip some DVDs, so I stopped using it. Now, I want to backup some new DVDs and need opinions on what to get. I don't care to pay, but I want to know the best combination of programs that rip, remove macrovision, compress and burn. I still have toast, so I assume that's still good to go? I heard there's a Mactheripper 4.0 thats good, but why is it not easy to find, and why does it now cost?

Well, did you ever try Handbrake ? It's free, and it does all you ask for.

However, it does NOT create a complete backup of a DVD (incl. all menus and stuff).

Mac DVDRipper Pro: Rip DVDs on your Mac - Free trial! is pretty good if you need a ripper for "complete" backups.

What do you want to compress to? Just a new DVD structure? If so, HB is the wrong tool. DVDToOneX would be a better option.

Have you tried RipIt? These rippers are ALWAYS part of a bundle (you just missed one).

Are we all in agreement that if I get Mactheripperpro I'll be the best ripper on the block?

Once ripped, what compressor do you suggest?

Burner?

Handbrake is best compressor (free)
I use Burn to burn...there are better options but Burn is free.

What's the point of ripping first, and then compressing ?

You might as well save the ripping step and convert with Handbrake all the way.

I do the same thing (e.g. rip several DVDs then transcode them). I do this so I can set Handbrake to batch convert a few DVDs and I walk away.

What are you compressing and burning for? Set top DVD players? Comptuers?

I use to use MTR, then DVD2OneX, and finally Toast.

Now I use RipIt and Toast.

+1

This is my workflow as well. Ripit is really easy.
