I chose all of those, though my fondness of classic rock is minimal. (unless you're referring to rock n roll)
Also, I love the fact that country is conspicuously absent.

What is "Dance", as opposed to "Techno"? Funk? R&B? Soul? Disco? IDM? Big Beat? House?
And where do I mark the overwhelming majority of electronic music that is neither?

There's nothing conspicuous about that, this was a poll about what kind of music you like.

This emphasis seemed more appropriate.

Genres make no sense to me. Pop vs rock vs classic rock vs new wave vs electronica vs dance .. they all connect at some point.
I simply like good music. No matter what genre people think it belongs to.

Originally House was a form of Techno.
I also ticked Other, because there are a few bands (Moloko, Björk, etc.) that don't fit into any category.

Sure.
My idea of the different sub-genres got stuck in the mid-90s anyway

That's what I consider "southern country influence."
Are Better Than Ezra still around? I have their How Does Your Garden Grow disc a long time ago, and it was so good I didn't dare try looking for another one, just in case it would suck and I'd be all disappointed.

I listen to all sorts of stuff. Seriously. My main playlist in iTunes right now includes country (Brad Paisley, George Strait, Restless Heart), '90s rock (Pearl Jam, Spin Doctors), a little bit of '60s rock (Mamas and Papas), folk (Be Good Tanyas) and fusion rock (Dave Matthews Band), as well as Japanese electronica (Tommy February6), rock (Cocco, ZONE) and pop (Melon Kinenbi, Ai Otsuka).
Basically, I think I can enjoy any genre — it just has to be a group that does it right. I tend more toward rock, I think, but I care more about groups than "kinds" of music.

you forgot METAL. No, I do not include metal in "rock."
Metal: Children of Bodom, In Flames, Norther, Imperanon, Dark Tranquillity, SuidAkara, Skyfire
Rock: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden... not a whole lot of this stuff
Classical: Yngwie Malmsteen, Pachelbel, Vivaldi... pretty much anything
Punk: OLD Green Day, Klamydia, Kylähullut, Andrew WK
Other: Nightwish (metal/rock with a sort of opera sound... surprisingly, it sounds really cool), J-Rock/Pop band called GLAY, and some Jazz.

He forgot several genres more distinct than metal (e.g. country).

I suppose if you're that closed minded, you prolly wouldn't like the death metal/classical mix that was happening in the earlier Bodom stuff, the jazz/metal in In Flames's song Satellites and Austronauts from their Clayman album, or the rock/classical mix Malmsteen is renowned for? pfft.
Cuckit--
yea, maybe country is more distinct. But who the hell cares about country anyway??
how old? eh, pretty much everything through Warning, I'd say...

Yes, I have unfortunately. And I love all genres (having over 10K songs in my library in all genres ranging from country to hardcore techno), it's just that I am a discerning listener in every one.
It's just that I have a low tolerance for instrumental masturbation a la Yngwe Malmsteen or gimmicky teen angst bands as Nightwish.

You're not really old enough to be a conservative, but it does strike me how insecure you are.
I'll bet there are well over a hundred songs in my record/mp3 collection that you would roll your eyes at...

Well, then, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I just happen to really dig that highly melodic stuff, to a degree. I don't know a whole lot of folks who are familiar with Nightwish, or even Malmsteen for that matter. Hence, my assumption. Although I'm not really seeing where you get the teen angst thing from Nightwish...? I got the angst bit, thats pretty obvious in some of their songs. Just never really saw it as angst of the teen variety.

First of all, I'm not sure where age factors into conservatism. Second, I'm not sure where conservatism factors into whether or not I like Nightwish or Malmsteen, or my mistaken assumption that erik hadn't heard them. Lastly, I really don't care what you think about my musical tastes (That's the only way I imagine you could figure I'm "insecure"). I was operating under the assumption that erik replied solely on my description, and not the actual music. But I guess he has heard their stuff after all, and didn't like it. Good for him, to each his own.

"classical rock", way to make it sound appealing to rich, wealthy people. Shouldn't be complaining, glad to see rap is not one of the top few, not a fan of it at all.

I like all of the types of music listed. I reckon my "other" includes pretty much anything that can be labeled under electronica (e.g., trance, drum 'n bass, trip hop, etc.), country, big band, salsa, merengue and mariachi.

Been getting into some cool Indian sh*t lately. Sitars are addictive. Any trippy/trance/psychedelic stuff is good -- electronic or otherwise.
