I have a 15" Macbook Pro and always use the power cord. Lately I've noticed that the light on the cord was always yellow, kept it at 95 to 100% and in the last 2 days it has turned to green and on my toolbar it says "not charging"! The battery stays at 84% even though I've been using it for about 2 hrs. Until about 2 weeks ago, the light would change from green to yellow and back. Now it's just green, but not charging. I checked the cord and it seems fine also checked the contacts and cleaned them with an eraser. No difference.

Go to an Apple Store or an Apple Specialist in your area. There is a quick and easy test that will identify if it's the charger or the battery.

Do you have a second charger you can test with? Or a friend with a charger?

In that case take it in to determine if it's the battery or the charger.

I'm in a remote area and a number of hours from an apple store, but I may be able to find an apple approved computer place.

You could also try calibrating the battery, drain it until your mac goes to sleep, then charge it fully.

If I drain the battery and the powercord is bad, would it charge the battery? My mac is only 2 years old. Is that old for the battery? I thought by always using the powercord that I was saving the battery!

Actually, although it's counter-intuitive, continuously charging the battery and never using it considerably shortens its lifespan. Batteries are meant to be used; constantly charging them without using them at all degrades them much faster. At the very least let it run down a bit every couple of weeks or so.

It seems like Apple batteries are even more sensitive to this problem than batteries from other manufacturers, but that just could be my anecdotal experience.

Thanks for that info, I guess I'll get a new battery and then try to drain this one. I use this computer for business, so I need a spare!

OK, I got a new battery today! And ofcoarse the original one is charging!?! I ran the battery down to 18%, plugged it back in when I got prompted to do so and it's charging and up to 95%, most of all it does not say "not charging"! It doesn't hurt to have an extra, but sure could use that money elsewhere. I am however noticing a dimming of the brightness!

Go to System Preferences>Energy Saver from the settings for dropdown menu choose battery. click on the options tab and uncheck the automatically dim display when using this power source box.

Hang on to the spare battery and see how the previously problematic one performs over time. It may simply have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, as they say.
