Customize Mac OS X to the extremes

When it comes to Mac OS X customization, I am a total newbie. I need someone to teach me a few things about: Changing the icons of things, changing the sounds, Etc.
You don't have to be too descriptive, just show me a few of the basics, and i'll figure the rest out myself.

Changing icons manually is easy, too. Select a file or folder, Get Info on it and 'copy'/'paste' in the small icon area in the top part of Get Info window.
To get to a default icon, use 'cut' instead.

spend some time at the gui customizations forum here; lots of useful info.
pick up the "customize your mac" issue of macaddict; all the basics are in there as well.
customization rocks!

For themeing I personally like Shape Shifter.. I liked this program so much that its the first trial software that I ended up paying for instead of just downloading a pirated version.
Unsanity makes quite a few other customization programs, check it out. The prices are reasonable, and the customer service is excellent.

i know you can change the icons for the trash.. but how? there is no "get info" on the trash
