question:
the 'magnifying glass' in the Safari url... where does that come from?
can it be edited?
I would like to be able to change the white background to transparent.

If you mean the magnifying glass that appears when you access MacNN, that's unmodifiable. Such little images are favicons; they can be any 16x16 image that a particular site designer wants. Of course, in the absence of a site-specific favicon, Safari throws in a blue globe next to the URL:
This can be changed, of course; it's in the Safari app skin in ThemePark.
