What if someone on this forum died and (obviously) stopped posting? How would we know what happened to them? Would their family or friends log in and tell us? Just wondering...

OK, everyone put it in your will to notify us. Then we can take bets on who goes first.

Do you want forgiveness or respect?

Given how fragmented this community is and how much all really hate each other, I seriously doubt any word of a death would get here.

And then your family would get hooked on the forum because of the nice and comforting messages everyone would post... I can clearly see it going round in circle

My best friend posts here, if he ever died I would post up his best picture and write up a short life and times with a memorial of him. So rest assured for some we would find out and for others we wouldnt.

Recently a member died at another forum I visit, and it found its way to the message board. But she was in personal contact with another forum member (hosted a radio show with him), and obviously he came on and told the rest of us.
If someone doesn't have any contact with other forum members, and hasn't included it in his/her will to have the communities informed by family members, I doubt we'd ever know. That's one of the scary things of Internet forums.

Sometimes, a friend or family member will post to tell people what happened. However, other than that, you're right; we wouldn't have any way of knowing.
As for PBD, I can vouch that he's alive; we still e-mail sometimes.

One of the guys in the GUI forum passed away, his site was the one that fixed (iFix?) the inconsistencies in Apple's apps.
His friend now maintains the site I believe.

That's why you shouldn't try to form social relationships over the internet, if they die you will never know!

Thoretically, one could now enter into a debate about whether or not one is still considered a "member" after one dies, uhm no - "passes away".

Is this a software product opportunity? An app that sets your Mac to wake up or start up once a week, and if you haven't clicked a little "I'm still alive" button in the past week (or some interval), will automatically post to the forums of your choice, alerting the communities of your passing.

This is a situation where having a significant other being a member of MacNN would be very important.

Like - - e r i k - - and me. Although I don't think he'd post about my death as I'm not that significant here

If it also automatically posts a final entry to my blog (think: "online obituary") - I'll buy it immediately ...

Seeing it from a different perspective. In online communities, one doesn't have to "die," or there is no "termination" (Bannination yes, but no Termination). In this way, if one stops posting... and if remembered, one passes into legend, like PBD.
It is still said that in the marketplace forum, PBD lurks for his missing "superdisk" drives. And perhaps, if you are lucky and ask the right question, you too will receive a response from him.

iWill?
We already have the iLife series, what we need now is iDeath: the complete application suite to handle all your online needs once you have died.
