Awesome, the true spirit of Christmas. I'm willing to bet Jesus' manger had a similar setup.
Okay, I'll admit - that made me laugh. I love a good sarcastic remark.
Like tooki, the first thing I thought was "seizures". I'm guessing the inhabitants of that house don't have any bedrooms in the front portion of their home, because I certainly wouldn't be getting much sleep with a ecstasy-induced Christmas rave light party going on in my front yard.
I think it's tacky, gratuitious, and tasteless. Over the top? Of course. I won't complain about energy resourcefulness though, because that debate has been well executed in this thread thus far. I think that while excessive use of that display could render a rather large energy bill on the homeowners part - I doubt that they would keep it on for more than a few hours each night.
This just screams "My SUV is bigger than your SUV so there!"
I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's the result of the evergrowing suburban neighbor "show off" contest. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an episode of Desperate Housewives this holiday season that incorporates this idea. The wives will go out and get some more botox injections in their luxury SUVs while the husbands stay at home and trump each other's christmas displays. It's Christmas - American Suburbia Style.

Nothing says `The birth of christ` like sucking power off the local grid.
I wonder if that thing attracts airplanes?

Which song? The song used in the Christmas Kit video was "Linus and Lucy" from the Vince Guraldi Trio (and from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" TV special). The music used in the video in the original post is by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a piece called "Wizards in Winter." It seems to have some roots in Tchaikovski's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" from The Nutcracker, but maybe that's just me.

Glad you're not my neighbor.
Tooki: "Yes, I think I'll be a pretentious asshole and call the police on my neighbors who have spent several weeks making this work of art that will only last about a minute instead of going outside and enjoying the fruits of their labor and having a good time. Yeah, having a good time with my neighbors sounds like a pretty lame idea, I think I'd have a lot more fun creating a big scene and getting the entire neighborhood to hate me. Ruining people's appreciation of their creation is an exciting prospect."
