I've noticed some of the black MacBooks on display at a local Apple Store squeak. There is also "hinge dust" near the contact points.

None of the white ones squeak...so far.

Anyone else have an experience?

Yes. I noticed this at the Apple store too. Some black MacBooks do squeak when opening/closing the hinge. And yes, none of the white MacBooks seem to do this....

Noticed the same thing as well, but I wondered if it was because so many more people open and close the Black ones since they are something new.

It might be the rubberized coating, though.

Wow the squeak sound in the video above has to be the most annoying sound ever. I wouldn't bet that most black macbooks are that bad though. I wouldn't bet on hinge noise being isolated to just black ones either. My powerbook used to have a pretty squeaky hinge and I've seen this video of a white macbook with a slight squeak: http://youtube.com/watch?v=61DC9NsalFg&search=macbook

First ever living laptop which cries when it's stained
Seriously, I hope Apple is going to address these issues quickly...

Mine was... it sqeaks now. No big deal, nothing different from my iBook. It's the piece of plastic that connects to the hinge, it because loose or something and squeaks. If I press down on it I won't hear it.

Ultimately, I don't even care.

Many G3 iBooks had a squeaking hinge problem that apparently could result in damage to the screen cable. My 600MHZ G3 iBook and many others went back to Apple for repairs under warranty.

It is disconcerting that some new black MacBooks are exhibiting a similar problem. And it makes me very happy that I waited to buy a MacBook; many thanks to all you unofficial Apple beta hardware testers!

I'm going to try a Glide Kit that comes with lube supposedly made for this particular problem. It's driving me nuts.

Local Apple Store had a squeaking black MB, the white MBs were OK.

Very, very annoying and embarrassing sound. Especially if you're gonna be in a meeting or a classroom or a library.

I called Apple Care to report the issue; the rep told me to go to a store and have it verified in person. When I did that this afternoon, it was much too loud in the store for the Genius Bar guy to hear how irritating the squeak really is -- he took it in the back to check it out, came back, and said, "Oh, that's a normal issue with these MacBooks. If we were to send it in for repair it would probably not change anything."

Unbelievable. I'm a college student and, as mentioned above, this is an extremely embarassing sound to have in class or the library.

Let us know if that Glide Kit works!

Eventually my MacBook started squeaking real bad. I sent it in for repair because of it. It came back still squeaking. I emailed apple directly. It got fixed.

Hinge squeak is not normal. 'Course, we're talking major hinge squeak, here. The genius should be able to hear it in the store--and I've been in a store where the squeak was totally dreadful.

I'm sorry but that apple store video is hilarious. I forgot I had my volume way up on my Alienware (yes bad-ass speakers onboard) and my wife nearly jumped off of the bed when it played.

I'm still laughing here...

That would drive me nuts, take it back.

Mine sqeeks... I've noticed it but it doesn't bug me much...

Truth be told, if the sqeek was the ONLY problem my macbook had I would consider myself lucky...

Maybe the MacBook 1.1 firmware I just installed will fix it...
