Live coverage

I'm guessing new Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Express, and not much else...

Blu-ray and HD DVD support in Final Cut/DVD Studio Pro, with H.264 High Profile.

EDIT:

Talking about Final Cut and Final Cut Server - Media asset manager.

Apple Store down.

I hope a new Final Cut Express. The new one is pretty good, but I'd like some updates.

It would be great if they used this event to launch updated displays, since I'm going to buy one this afternoon.

That's what I was wondering. Could be Linux though.
Edit: Final Cut Server's a spendy little guy.

Meh. "correction: Final Cut Server is cross platform, not studio"

That makes more sense.

Oh I missed that too. Oops!

Edit: It was their mistake.

Edit 2: What is an HD input device?

I think they're referring to a HD version of the IO. We have the SD version in our edit suites. It captures uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 video.

Apple has announced an outboard hardware video encoder for $3500.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, especially since the Apple Cinema Displays really should get HDCP support (esp. for Blu-ray and HD DVD support). However, I do note that the Cinema Displays were updated just 2 weeks ago (albeit only in the form of a price drop).

New app (that I'll probably never use): Color

"We want to do for color grading what we've done for editing. We're introducing a new application today: Color. Real time application color grading. I want to turn our attention to FCP editors the Coen Brothers." Showing a colorization demo from the Coen. Stylized color in O Brother... brownificated.

Note the lens flares.

I wish they had a video feed. I'm having a hard time visualizing exactly how it works.

I like to think it's a little shout-out to their homies at the NN.

Ha, the upgrade price from Final Cut Studio to Final Cut Studio 2 is less than the upgrade price from Adobe CS2 to Design CS3.

Both products are different, so the price comparission is not quite valid. Final Cut Studio 2 price should be compared to the Production Suite which has Premiere, Encore, After Effects, etc.

The difference there is even greater. Video editing is higher-end than normal graphic design.

Indeed, I am a bit suprised at the low price to upgrade.

Well, they did hit on price a lot during the presentation — ditto for when they introduced the Mac Pro. It seems like Apple's aggressively trying to shake its reputation for being uber-expensive.

I wonder if ProRez422 will see wider adoption than Apple's last codec attempt (Pixlet). ProRez422 is aimed a bit higher than Pixlet (4k vs HD), but only does 6:1 compression, while Pixlet did 20-25:1.

More threaded Compressor is no surprise, and a hopefully a sign of things to come. Qmaster looks great, especially the integration with non-Apple apps.

I can't seem to find a page for the new external encoding box at either Apple's or AJA's site. But probably pretty similar to the existing AJA IO (LA/LD) products.

I'd go the other way and say they're trying to point out how cheap they are compared to the other guys.

Final Cut Studio 2

Interestingly, for Motion, the X1600 is listed as highly recommended, but the 7600 GT is not, despite the fact the 7600GT is the much faster GPU. I suspect it's because they only want to sell "pro" hardware. There is no 7600 GT in the pro Macs, but there is an X1600 in the MacBook Pro.

Recommended for Color though is the X1900 XT.

I was a little disappointed that they didn't add complete HD DVD or Blu-ray support. Partial HD DVD support remains however.

That is not surprising though, considering Final Cut Studio 2 is still using DVD Studio Pro 4. I'm guessing that DVD Studio Pro 5 will get both full HD DVD and Blu-ray support. That will likely have to wait for Leopard though, for full built-in UDF 2.5+ support, and an updated DVD Player.app.
