Analysts have continued to refine their expectations for Apple's latest quarter, with forecasts for iPhone shipments averaging 55.3 million units, according to a Fortune roundup. If the predictions prove accurate, the company's smartphones will have achieved 16 percent growth from the same quarter last year.

The average includes forecast data from 44 analysts, including 27 professionals and 17 independents, with a spread of just 9.7 million units between the most optimistic and pessimistic. Notably, analysts cited in a similar report last year placed much wider bets with a 20-million-unit disparity between the top and bottom predictions.

On the bearish side of the latest numbers, Canaccord analyst Michael Walkley recently issued his prediction for 54 million iPhones and 24.8 million iPads in the last quarter. He believes the iPhone 5s has likely outsold the iPhone 5c by a two-to-one margin, while the recent China Mobile launch is expected to push March-quarter sales past 42 million units.

Apple is set to formally disclose its fiscal Q1 2014 financials on Monday.
