Holy crap, we got an update to IE. It doesn't seem to be on the Mactopia website but MacCentral is reporting that its out. Hopefully this fixes a lot of the 5.1.4 issues...

Anyone try it yet? I'm stuck at work and I gotta wait until lunch time to check it out.

They laughed at my Mac, it had no CLI. They laughed at Linux, it had no GUI. I installed MacOS X, and shut them up.

MacCentral sucks so damn bad, why post the article with no direct d/l link? It's not even posted on MacTopia, what idiots.

I wonder how big this update will be, I am really looking forward to it.

The press release is out already by M$ but they haven't made it available for download yet. Macminute has the story too.

When they release it, it should be here:

<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mac/DOWNLOAD/IE/ie52.asp" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/mac/DOWNLOAD/IE/ie52.asp</a>

It's not released yet ! But I think that this will be the download location...I hope

Yeah, that is no good...why would I want to fish for a file on HD and then wait for it to open via the browser? That's why Scrapbook is so nice to have, it's right there and instant within the program.

You can't get that by saving a file to disk.

Just setting the record straight. IE has problems, but it has some nice stuff, too.

Gul Banana:

As taken from the MacTopia web-site...

"Internet Scrapbook
Collect Web pages, such as news articles and e-commerce receipts, for future reference. The Internet Scrapbook provides a snapshot in time, so even if a Web page changes, you still have a record of the page."

I use it for receipts all the time, why would I print out a page (as they state you should do for record keeping) when I can simply hit a button and have that page saved forever, no matter what. It literally takes a picture of your screen and dates it with the time and whatnot from when you were there. It rocks!

Yeah, you don't get to "pause" a form in the middle, but I'm not sure that really makes all that much of a difference. Most forms I can think of, except perhaps for messageboard postings (which I use a text editor for if I don't think I'm going to be able to write it in one session), ask for information that I'm not likely to forget.

My scrapbook is full of mapquest search results, forms for billing and submitting info, as well as receipts for payments. Simply saving would get you an error file on many of these.

In short, saving does not compare to scrapbook functionality.

It updated a crapload of files, but the only thing immediately apparent is the Quartz text smoothing. Was hoping for the option to eliminate pop-unders, but no such luck.

Nothing seems changed except for text rendering, which was already there if you use Silk...
Question: now that Quartz rendering is built in, do I have to add IE to the list of disabled items?

Very interesting that this update is NOT available under software update. I guess the buddy-buddy days are that much closer to over. I figured that since the agreement lasts through to August (I believe) every pre-Jaguar would come via software update.

It still doesn't use quartz in these boards or in the address bar field. It seems a little faster, but I'll stick w/ Omni.

.gif issue aside, I'd like to know if this version is more or less stable on macnn.com for some of you. I have to force-quit IE 5 on macnn.com at least once a week.

After surfing for 20 minutes trough my rutine web sites I can affirm that ie 5.2 is the fastest browser available. It seems that page rendering, start up time, and downloading is faster. Go for it!

Force quit once a week? Consider yourself lucky, I have to about 5 times a day...minimum. It's always the .gif issue for me, so that it hard to put aside, everything else on MacNN has been good for me in IE 5.1 or 5.2
