I have been a long time user of "ClickToFlash" extension and just downloaded the newest version (3.1.7). But I had to DL from the MacUpdate site since it is not available on the Apple Safari Extensions site. When installing, Safari has a "are you sure" popup that says to only use (trusted?) extensions from their site. Am I OK still using this extension or are people finding advantages in other flash blockers? Note that I hate Flash but have to use for a few media sites (Daily Show, Colbert, etc.) Thanks for any advice.

I would recommend another route: de-install flash on your system and install Chrome instead. Chrome includes its own Flash plug-in, so you don't have to install Flash separately. Chrome also has a click-to-flash plugin. Then use Chrome for all Flash web pages and Safari for everything else. That's what I and many other people do.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

What OreoCookie said.

I'd also install the Eject2Flash extension (if you can still find it; the developer's site appears to be down, but I can help you out otherwise), which allows you to just click a button in Safari that automatically opens the current page in Chrome, should you ever encounter something that absolutely requires Flash.

Bonus side-effect: The browser reports to the website that no Flash player is installed. The more often this happens, the sooner those websites will have no choice but to drop Flash entirely.

Flash successfully uninstalled. Chrome just works! Thank you both.

Why not use Click ToPlugin instead? It blocks any plugin and also HTML5, so you have control over any video or audio item, not just Flash? I got mine from here:
ClickToPlugin & ClickToFlash Safari extensions

Because that still suggests to sites that Flash is installed, and you still have to deal with yet another plugin that is rendered insecure every few weeks.

The insecurity thing isn't really relevant, that is a tiny Safari Extension with no real threat surface. Flash isn't loaded until you have clicked, assuming you don't enable that special exception for invisible plugins. That it suggests that Flash is loaded is a bit of a pain, as it probably will keep Flash seem relevant a bit longer, but it has the side-effect of blocking obnoxious flash ads while allowing well-behaved ads. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you (see adblocking debate again).

The downside to using Chrome is that it is such a battery hog compared to Safari.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
