wouldn't it be easier to setup a 'tournament' and use polling?
edit: It sucks that you can't 'weigh' the choices, but if you use checkboxes you'll be able to weed out the losers. I think the max poll is 12, so it won't take that many threads to find the WINNAR.
edit 2:
26 - a kayaker's dream
42 - cool shot
27 - nice shot col.
22 - can't go wrong with f*cking bugs.

You're right that the max poll is 12. I thought of doing it like you suggested - a tournament, but the idea of coming up with the tournament tree and then managing multiple threads, etc. didn't sound like fun.

some kind of voting system would be very handy. So handy, I'd be inclined to vote for it.

I'll have to take a closer look later. Right now, they all look pimpy enough to win.

Edited because I instantly become illiterate beyond point number 3. Thank you for the heads up, AKcrab.

I would love to use a proper voting system, however the server that the pics sit on doesn't support any CGI. Some other members have come forward to offer web hosting with Gallery software which will allow us to upload our pics and also vote. Personally, this contest was about having fun and enabling forum members to showcase their work. Future contests will be better. I just did this contest to get the ball rolling.
I'm having a hard time picking my favorites.

Very humbling viewing. Many thanks waxcrash.
46 breathtaking, majestic, beau.ti.ful
20 concise, classic, colourful
72 mystic, enigmatic, captivating
51 concise, classic, colourful
56 intriguing, fun, edgy
Honourable mentions: 8, 15, 16, 61 and 47. Pity Spiky Dog chose the pic he did. A couple of others from his website would have won my #1 vote here. But I suppose that could be said for any number of other entrants.
Thanks again to every participant. Looking forward to an iteration.

28 Great atmosphere and light
10 Great composition.

Only four.
I would put mine as 5 but that would not be appropriate.
i would contest the validity of some of these pictures as outdoor/nature too.

13 -
sunset colors are fantastic, sharp. love that dock. kind of wish i could see the boats a little more clearly. looks great. makes me want to like fishing.
48 -
what a great image. it actually makes me feel like i'm in the past.
56 -
very sharp, well composed, well lighted. captures a feeling of youth nicely. kids love climbing. i like the kidnapper in between the bins.
19 -
great colors. so bright, so lush. the contrast of the rock and the moss almost makes it look like two pictures fused together. the water looks great, too. very interesting.
9 -
i've tried to get a good look at that before, but i always burn my forehead. looks cool up close.
12 -
it's like a leaf telling a scary story. there's something very human about that leaf. i think that leaf is watching me.

Man, this was tougher than voting for president!
But after serious consideration here's my take:
57: Some folks might think this is a poor photograph but I tend to see it as a spectacular and unusual image due to Vivid Lighting, Dynamic Composition, and Intriguing (i.e., what is it?) Subject.
28: Really good nature/landscape photography is a combination of the above mentioned considerations (along with luck in terms of time & place, and a good eye to see it happening). This photograph has the first two elements in spades, and a lot of luck to go with a good eye.
The above are my top two winning images. There are a bunch of others very worthy of honorable mention but in keeping with the 5 limit I'll only mention three:
61
64
20
The above three have taken what might otherwise be considered mundane subject and by dint of good light & good composition made a fine photograph.
It all depends what one is looking for. For me it all comes down to light, composition and use of subject.
Good work everyone!
Thanks, waxcrash, for organizing this.

40 --- I love macro, and the color is amazing, but that blur line is a bit abrupt.
46 --- again, I love mtns, the clouds are awesome.
31 --- sea and mtns!! awesome, plus I was in italy and it's just beautiful there.
Good job you all!

67. Took a bunch of pictures of this myself; this one's outstanding, and the subject is endlessly fascinating.
16. The colors are understated, and wind up being more impressive as a result.
6. Spooky...
15. Looks almost like the forest moon Endor...

11-love the feeling this gives..like a crisp fall evening with the sun setting, getting ready to settle in for the night...a great sunset picture without having to show the Sun, where was this taken?
31-interesting color tones, and i like seeing 'God-light' shine down thru the coulds in those intense rays...the water looks like it is being whipped with wind & rain yet the sky seems rainless?
58-a simple life, easier times, comforting
1-so many great things going on here..i feel that the focus & composition could be a bit better but overall really quite nice
9-unique, reminds me of the 'Flurry' os x screensaver
