Command-Shift-3 for the whole screen.
Command-Shift-Caps Lock-4 allows you to select windows, dialog boxes etc. and not the whole screen.

thanks for your help, i really appreciate it.
forgive my ignorance, but where does it put the screen capture?
i did the key command and it made the click noise.
then i opened photoshop, and tried to paste it, but it didn't have anything to paste.
then, i opened up the clipboard, but i didn't see anything that looked like a screen capture.
help, please.

Look for a series of files called "Picture 1," "Picture 2," etc., in your startup drive's [Macintosh HD] root directory.

Command-Shift-3 for the whole screen.
Command-Shift-Caps Lock-4 allows you to select windows, dialog boxes etc. and not the whole screen.
Also, command-Shift-4 without the caps lock on allows you to drag the area you want captured. That is the one I use most.
