What are your thoughts on this? My job would make wearing an actual wedding band hazardous at times. I've thought about getting her initials, the date, or something like that tattoo'd on my ring finger in a place that would be covered up by an actual wedding band that I'd wear when at home.

I Googled the topic a bit, but most of what I found discussed how hard it is to remove the tattoo and not much else.
Will someone correlate ring-wearing to some antiquated ritual about property and ownership and assert that it's lame?
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Pros:
  • Your ring wouldn't get caught on anything, and if you broke or injured your hand, they wouldn't have to try and cut it off (in my case, my wedding band is titanium, so I'm screwed if that were to happen).

Cons:
  • If you get divorced and have to get the tattoo altered.

This is not an issue, as we're way totally super in love. I mean, not enough that we'd live together, but still super in love.

Meaning that you'd never get divorced?

Or meaning that if you'd ever separate, you wouldn't mind wearing the ring tattoo as a reminder of a shared experience?

if it's less easy to remove then it's less romantic isn't it?

then again a barbed-wire/tribal/stitches/zipper themed ring would be awesome.

I spent 25 years doing electronics maintenance, with the requirement that I remove any jewelry whenever I touched the hardware. Since my wife was also an electronics tech (at the time, she's a nurse now-long story) she understood that I might not wear my band 24/7, and since SHE couldn't wear HER'S 24/7 either, it was just fine.

Express the safety issue involved in your work to your fiance in a way that shows that you WANT to wear the ring all the time, but you would rather retain the ability to use that finger-or even just retain the finger-so there will be times you can't wear it. She should get it.

Now develop a massive habit of removing any rings whenever you're even near whatever it is you do that could be hazardous to people wearing rings, and you should continue being able to count to ten without a problem!

I would avoid the tattoo for a couple reasons. First, the web between fingers is very sensitive. Second, the nerves that supply your fingers actually go BETWEEN them-through that web. And they're not very deep at all. In other words, it could be Very Bad if the needle got just a tiny bit too deep...

Something my wife has done several times is get us new rings; nicer ones, fancier ones, even rings that have fancy engraving on them. If you get a tattoo of your "wedding ring," that sort of takes that option away.

This is interesting info, and I'll definitely take it into consideration. I don't have any other tattoos and I'm really not sure how well I'd take the pain, but for some reason the idea just really appeals to me.

Not a bad idea. I think it is about the only tattoo I'd ever get.

The wedding date done very small and in a color other than black. Possibly red or green.

Do you think your fiance will get a matching tattoo?

Doubt it, and she made it clear that this is the only tattoo that I'd be allowed to get.

If she doesn't get a matching one, I wouldn't do it. It's weird if you have completely different "styles" of wedding bands.

Agreed

I'll be honest, I like the idea of it, it's different and if done right can be unique. But I just can't justify it. For me it goes into the category of "Tattooed Names." Not assuming anything about your relationship though. But what if anything ever did happen?

I'd follow ghporter's reply too as well. I'm sure talking to her about it will get you in the right direction. Good luck eitherway.

Please, please, please do not operate exclusively under the notion that "we'll never get divorced". PLEASE.

You can't predict the future. You may be happily married for 25 years and then suddenly have it all collapse in on you. I'm not saying that you should have no faith in your fiancee and your future marriage, but don't blanketly assume that everything is going to be hunky dory until you die. It could end up hardcore screwing you in the end.

One of my coworkers is in his early 60s. His wife left him a few years ago, and it was completely unexpected - and he got completely screwed in the divorce (particularly because he's a dude).

Divorce happens. It's tragic when it does, but it does happen, and it's naive to assume that you're immune from it (or other marital problems, for that matter).

I think that to show your true love, you should get her full name tattooed on the inside of your bottom lip.

So why do you feel like you should have something there when you take your ring off?

I have no aversion to tattoos but I wouldn't do it.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

The passionately-in-love feeling you have now isn't something that will necessarily be sustained indefinitely for the next fifty or sixty years.

It is completely unrealistic to insist that your marriage couldn't possibly end, and you are immune to those kinds of marital problems. I'm not saying that you should expect something that tragic to happen - I'm just saying that you shouldn't assume it will never ever happen in a million billion years.

You can say "we'll work through any problems and will avoid divorce at all costs", but you can't honestly believe that your relationship will never have problems in the future. No marriage is perfect.

Well, they lived together before getting married, so they're about 356% more likely to get a divorce.

The likelihood of divorce is inversely related to the size of the dowry. Something to keep in mind.

Jesus tapdancing Christ, I'm just saying that it's illogical to be unrealistic about the future.

I speak of this firsthand, having seen how badly my mother got screwed when my father left her after twenty-three years of marriage. She was convinced they'd never get divorced. Then they did. Suddenly she found herself in a world of hurt, particularly since she hadn't taken the steps necessary to keep her education current (she was a physical therapist and let her license lapse for so long that it is no longer renewable), and ended up unemployed for more than nine months.

It's fantastic and heart-warming when a marriage lasts forever. I fully expect to not get divorced. However, I don't deny that divorce is a possibility, because humans are fallible and marriages can fail. Boyfriend and I both realize this, have talked about it, and agree that it's naive and ignorant to not recognize the fact that a marriage CAN fail. This doesn't mean that we're planning on getting married and therefore planning on getting divorced...

Saying "we'll get married and definitely absolutely will never get divorced or have major problems" is akin to those who don't really like kids but have them anyway, saying "we'll like our own even if we don't like anybody else's". Marriage is a life-changing decision and not something you can take lightly.

I'm not accusing anyone here of taking marriage lightly, I'm just saying that it's not some fun thing you just do for shits 'n giggles.
