Any Apple branded DVD drive will work. Any non-apple one is potentially a gamble. They will all read DVDs under OS X, but not all are necessarily bootable.
You should be ok with a Sony or Pioneer drive, but again, no guarantee unless its Apple branded.
If you go for a burner, any of the Pioneer DVR-1XX drives should be ok.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I had replaced the Apple cd-drive inside my B&W G3 with a DVD combo drive; System Profiler & Toast list it as HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B, which is either a LG or a Hitachi. Boots Mac OS X Tiger and even Mac OS 9.2.1

I would choose a Pioneer before anything else.
