I did it! Woo Hoo! This is awesome! Check out my results...
Their all Mac icons... i really haven't decided what to use yet, I'm still just playing around with it. Im thinking the ferrari logo would be cool. I am also planing on changing the battery icon and a few other things...

[Do not post oversize inline images. --tooki]

To do this yourself you will need to download alterPod and I highly recommend reading the help file (in the help menu), it explains every step in detail, except the last part. The "Firmware restore" part has a slight bug. Keep reading to see how to fix it.

When you start alterPod you will extract the firmware from your iPod. Then alterPod can extract the images from the firmware file. It saves all the images in .pgm format so you will need Graphic Converter to edit them. The iPod only supports 4 shades of grey (as far as I can tell) so keep that in mind when you are editing the images

Once you are happy with the images you will need to re-Insert them Into the firmware file you extracted from the Ipod - then this next part Is goofy, so pay attention. when you go to replace the firmware in the iPod alterPod will have your iPod selected in a drop down menu already, but you need to click it and select it again anyway. If you don't do that it wont update your iPod. Once you see the "you ipod is updated" dialog you will need to eject your ipod and do a hard reset by holding play and menu for 10 seconds.

Now all of this is possible thanks to 2 guys. a guy named ipodwizard in the iPodHacks forum made the Windows version (it's called iPodWizard and has a few more features than the the mac version, if you have windows you can download it from the same link i gave above for alterpod). And a guy named aprodite, the site admin over at podite. Aprodite has single handedly ported the app over to Mac and is still adding features to make it just as good as the Windows version, if not better.

Soon to be implemented features include:
- Font editing / replacement
- string editing (example: instead of saying "do not disconnect" it could say "disconnect and die")
- replace multiple images at a time (right now you have to do it one at a time untill you get em all)

warning: this is still labeled as Beta software. use at your own risk. If you read the help file you should be OK though.

OK, i just don't want to take credit for such an important discovery.

Side note. The new version od alterPod (0.3b) is now avaiilable here This version fixes the firmware restore problem with selecting your ipod, like i mentioned before.

EDIT: I removed the part about image replace not working, because it works fine, I was just too sleepy to test it right last night.

I haven't tried it, but aprodite said it will work. With the ipod photo theres something like 196 images extracted, 2nd and 3rd generation ipods (like mine) have 94 images. 1st gen ipods have abour 65. I'm not sure how many the mini has.

It does work, I'm not sure if the image size is the same, if it is I can email you the ferrari icon I made.

Looks cool, is that something to do with Lord of the Rings? (I still haven't seen any of those movies yet) It looks like a ring with a sword going through it.

Camera Geek note: If your digital camera has a macro setting turn it on for this shot. Macro will let your camera focus extremely close. The symbol for macro is a little flower. I used "super Macro" for my shot. Most cameras don't have super macro, but if yours does it could help.

I can't figure that one out either... Haven't seen it yet.

My only complaint with the icon switching is that the apple you see when the ipod resets/wakes up hasn't been found in the firmware yet, thus you can't change it. You can change 4 other apples, but none of em are this apple.

Oops, looks like I made the height 480 instead of the width... sorry Tooki. I will change the Ferrari one for you, since it looks like you missed that one.

Clarus the dogcow is ubercool. I've been trying to figure out a way to incorporate Clarus into my tattoo plans, hehe.

Which bitmap is that one? Grabbed from the Cairo font, or from an old printer driver resource?

It's from an old printer set up dialog, with the help of google image search
