Tiger does not include iLife programs nor 3rd party software. It's on the web page requirements.

"Stuffit Expander is not included with Tiger. But that's not all: if you have Stuffit installed already, the Tiger install REMOVES IT without telling you. At first it took me awhile to figure out that it was gone, just because years of Mac-using experience had made me thing "Well, of COURSE it has Stuffit Expander installed." I had to download Expander from stuffit.com just to be able to unstuff files I'd already had on my compute"

Thanks

Do we really need Stuffit Anymore with OS X since it does .zip?

Stuffit was not removed from my system (Archive and Install), but the framework was moved to /Previous Systems/ so needless to say a re-install was necessary. 9.0 does not appear to work, however 9.0.1 does.

FWIW

Does in still come in a .sit file?

Talk about a bone headed move. You need to have it, in order to get it.

I hope this is the beginning of the end for Aladdin Systems.

Too much keyboarding, not enough fresh air. It's come as dmgs and as binhexs for a long time. Good grief, version 5.5 came as a binhex.

This was already being discussed here. Some people appear to have the behaviour that you and I experienced, some people have similar but not exact behaviour, and some people didn't appear to be affected at all.

The people who seem to have been unaffected appear to have at one point (prior to the Tiger install) downloaded and installed a newer version of Stuffit than the one that came with Panther. I never upgraded because I never saw a need, but when I installed Tiger (doing an "Archive and Install"), the installer appeared to have uninstalled or otherwise removed the Stuffit application from my computer.

As for the usefulness of it, software is still quite frequently distributed as .sit and .sitx archives. On my machine there are 230 archives that need Stuffit to be able to expand them.

Does in still come in a .sit file?

Nah, it comes as a DMG file with installer inside now.

Well, I guess the good news is that maybe this will get developers to quit doing retarded things like distributing software as a .dmg.sit. Unfortunately, since much existing stuff does do that, new users are going to be confused by why they can't open craploads of files that they download.

Another thing - does Tiger have any GUI app that can expand file formats such as .tgz, .tbz, and the like? Because that is a role that used to go to Expander...

I've heard Tiger's BOMArchiveHelper does more than just zips. (Still haven't got my copy, so I can't say from firsthand experience.)

Ah, that would be nice. Panther's BOMArchiveHelper does support .cpgz, as if anyone ever used that format (it's weird, actually - drag a file onto BOMArchiveHelper's icon in CoreServices, and it'll actually make it into a .cpgz instead of a .zip).

Yes, Panther came with Stuffit. I don't think anybody's disputing that.

Panther includes BOMArchiveHelper, yes, but the version of BAH that comes with Panther only supports .zip, .cpio, and .cpgz.

BomArchiveHelper has icons for: bz, bz2, cpgz, cpio, gz, tar, tbz, tbz2, tgz, z and zip.

I am glad stuffit is removed. Developers now have to distribute there software in compressed files that can be opened by an application that is not the worse os x app ever.

You need to give up way too much information to download from the Stuffit website. I got the free expander within a few minutes from Limewire. There's probably an installer on the Panther CD somewhere too, but I don't have one to hand

If you follow the download link from the MacUpdate page, you can bypass the intrusive info request:

Agreed. They make it cumbersome just to get Expander. First, give up your information. Then you have to check your e-mail for the download link. Why not just give the freaking link?

And I thought Real was bad...

I really wish it were possible to make a Stuffit competitor without getting sued by Allume, but apparently it isn't.

Excuse me, but when did Stuffit become "the worse [sic] os x app ever"?

I would have agreed until 9.0.1, which actually manages to launch before I get bored waiting

Add me to the pile who had to download a copy of Expander in order to open up any zipped files. I also couldn't navigate through the Stuffit site, and finally gave up and downloaded a copy from LimeWire.
