i personally like phpbb
take a look at sourceforge for a ton more of the boards, find something that looks best for your site.

think long-term:
maybe your site will expand, to the point where you decide you have enough money to throw at those nice vBulletin people. can you import your old board into it?
i think phpBB's okay, but still a little buggy. i haven't used ikonboard since version 2.1.9, and i haven't really used any of the others.
i always use phpBB for the above reason, though. i just like to keep future options open, to avoid tons of work

I just set up a site using Invision PB last week. It's extremely easy, and pretty full-featured. So far, I haven't run into any bugs or problems.

Mark me up for a phpBB, one of the darndest easiest things you could ever do! I'm set up - click on my sig pic if you wanna see how it looks.
It's pretty customisable as well, as long as you don't mind a bit of tinkering.

It's a great piece of software, and V2 that he's working on is going to be far above and beyond.

I like the vBulletin that MacNN uses, but I notice that they have had quite a few instances of database corruption. That is a bit disconcerting to me.
I've just recently begun playing with PHPbb and it's quite nice. In the old days we used WebBBS, but it's CGI-based and not really appropriate for a high-traffic site.

I would also suggest invision. Stay away from vbull.... (macnn didn't hear me say that). Invision just has it all, especially now with the 1.2 update. Solid software and easily customizable. I couldn't more highly recommend it.

if you ever read the excuses for said corruption, you'd know that the server always kops the blame; not the software (ie, vBulletin)
