While cleaning up an abondoned apartment, they find a dead guy in a dirt filled bathtub.
Partially mummified body found in AZ tub - Yahoo! News
PHOENIX - A partially mummified body was found in a bathtub filled with dirt in an apartment that was stacked to the ceiling with garbage and human waste.
Owners of the small, standalone unit thought it had been abandoned in August, when rent stopped being paid, Phoenix police Sgt. Joel Tranter said Monday.
Tranter said the owners didn't decide to do anything about the filthy apartment until last week, when they paid other tenants in the complex to clean it out.

I'm not sure I understand the story.
He described the body as part skeleton and partly mummified, and that it had been there at least several years.
Tranter said the body may be that of a man who rented the unit in 1995 and was last seen seven years ago. He said the property owners saw a man they didn't recognize at the unit four years ago and asked him who he was.
Tranter said the man identified himself as the original renter. The owners didn't push the issue and continued to receive rent checks.
That man has not been seen since August, and Tranter said police are looking for him.
So whose body is it? The original renter? The unrecognized man? And just how old is the corpse?
So the original renter rented the unit in 1995 (13 years ago) and was last seen 7 years ago, but someone who identified himself as the original renter was seen 4 years ago and hasn't been seen since August. The last rent check was paid in August too. So what's going on? The corpse is apparently several years old, but someone's been paying rent until just a few months ago.
What's creepier is the scene in the bathroom. It's just bizarre.
And I'm surprised it took the landlord that long (from August '07 til February '08) to collect outstanding rent. My parents own rental property, and you can be sure that if they don't receive rent for the month within the first week of the month, they'll be sure to check up on the tenants and what's keeping them.

I read it that a guy killed the original owner, buried him in the bathtub and continued to live in the apartment while still paying rent. Nice.

Wow, the second guy continued to live there with a corpse in the tub? Where did he shower?

Apparently both the dead guy and the killer stunk up the place.

Weird. We had a similar one this week in the UK. Neighbours complained about smell, council services come round to find flats tennent (council owned flat) has been living with the body of his lodger for the last SEVEN YEARS! Mummified corpse on the sofa.
The mad thing is that the council sent a cleaning team to the flat two years ago AND THEY MISSED THE MUMMIFIED CORPSE ON THE SOFA!!!
Tennent now in council care.

I have nothing of substance to add, but would like to note for the record that this thread is gong places.

Perhaps the "civilised" bit just refers to the fact that it's not American?

I've been to Scotland and Egypt, trust me, there are places far less civilized than the USA.
