I'm still struggling to troubleshoot my dead MDD dual 1.25. I have narrowed it down to the Logic Board or Processor. I suppose it could also be the PSU but it does power up the fans & the red light on the Logic Board is on.

I'd like to try a CPU. If it fires up, bad CPU. If not, bad Logic Board. If anyone has a spare MDD CPU, please let me know. I'm also willing to ship my CPU to anyone who is willing to test it. I'm in the Chicago area.

TIA

Jeff

$20 on it being the CPU, They burn up quickly, with the stupid fan letting the processors overheat. Apple knows about it and pretends it doesn't exist. There are quite a few instants of logic board, processor chip failures for this type of mac. I personally have seen about 21 of the 30 MDD macs in a campus fail (not a fault of the campus, or the enviroment) but of the processor chip overheating and dying early. (normal climate)

Apple doesn't care, even when my personal machine did this (MDD) they tried to pretend it was out of warranty so they wouldn't have to replace the logic board, when it WAS in warranty. I ended up being lucky and bought replacement cpu's for it for $300, (Apple charges $850 +150labor) go figure, ridiculous. Unless you have Applecare, I'd just buy a new machine, and this time by Applecare

That's really strange. I've only replaced one or two MDD CPUs since I began working as a tech, and I've worked on a ton of MDDs, including my own. I actually replaced the heat sink in my MDD with the Dual 1.42 copper model because I knew that my bedroom was too hot to reasonably run a G4 24x7. When running max CPU on dnetc, my MDD is generally at between 132F and 137F with the new heatsink depending on the ambient temperature. Combined with 2 Western Digital WD2000s in the ATA/100 bay, my MDD is running solid since I got it in June of '04. I've never seen an MPU burn up that wasn't due to someone overclocking it and not providing adequate cooling.

That said, I am not able to test your processor, but you might try picking up a GigaDesigns MDD processor from a place that allows open box returns and see how that goes (if nobody else is able to help you out.)

Oh, I have no idea that upgrade options to MDD were available, so I after read your post I found this CPU upgrade at GigaDesigns site. Let me ask, is there any reason to that lack of CPU upgrades aimed to the MDD Power Macintosh?

Thanks.
