He did a lot of work promoting research into repairing spinal cord injuries, I wonder if it will wain a bit without him, or be pushed forward in his memory.

There's a big difference between an infant and an embryo.

My ode to superman (to be sung to Don McClean's American Pie - only 1 stanza musically removed)

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that red cape used to make me smile
And I knew if I ran the news
That I could makes people leap from their shoes
And, maybe, they'd feel safe under his watch

But October rain made me shiver
With every paper I delivered
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride.
But something touched me deep inside
The day, our hero died.

So bye-bye, superman and clark kent
Went down to your crystal palace
But saw the place was up for rent
And all the evil doers were drinking wine and champaign
Singing, "this will be the day that we'll reign."
"This will be the day that we'll reign."

Are you the cape crusader,
From the planet Krypton, a foreign invader,
If a crystal tells you so?
Do you know of Kryptonite and lead
How to save Louis Lane from falling to her death
And can you teach me how to fly real slow?

Well I know that you're in love with her
Because I saw you soaring right through the air
You both were in your pajamas
Man, you let her know that you care

You were a lonely teenage farm boy
Whose elderly father was soon to die
But I thought I was going to cry
The day, our hero died.

I started singing,
Bye-bye, superman and clark kent
Went down to your crystal palace
But saw the place was up for rent
And all the evil doers were drinking wine and champaign
Singing, "this will be the day that we'll reign."
"This will be the day that we'll reign."

Now for nine years we've been on our own
And our hero's powers were not at full,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the doctor declared the diagnosis
In a white cape that induced our hypnosis
And a voice that tore right through me

Oh, and while the world prayed for his salvation
The doctors fell short in their restoration
Steel turned icy cold
No miracle was performed
And while Lex Luther reminisced
The Fantastic Four raised their fists
And heros and villains for a moment could coexist
The day, our hero died

We were singing,
Bye-bye, superman and clark kent
Went down to your crystal palace
But saw the place was up for rent
And all the evil doers were drinking wine and champaign
Singing, "this will be the day that we'll reign."
"This will be the day that we'll reign."

I met Louis Lane many years after
And I asked her if she still had any laughter
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the comic book store
Where I'd read about our hero years before
But the man said the hero wasn't there

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
Our harmony had been crushed and broken.
And the three men I admired most:
The feather, son, and the holy ghost,
They tried to console our great loss
The day, our hero died.

And they were singing,
Bye-bye, superman and clark kent
Went down to your crystal palace
But saw the place was up for rent
And all the evil guys were drinking wine and champaign
Singing, "this will be the day that we'll reign."
"This will be the day that we'll reign."

They were singing,
Bye-bye, superman and clark kent
Went down to your crystal palace
But saw the place was up for rent
And all the evil guys were drinking wine and champaign
Singing, "this will be the day that we'll reign."
"This will be the day that we'll reign."

The topic is paying a little tribute to a good man that has passed on, not as a pulpit to preach for or against stem cell research. Don't let one persons ignorant comment derail the thread. Ignore it and move on. I'm sure there will be plenty of threads for flaming his opinion before all is said and done.

(isn't it funny how people who are aginst abortion, seemingly are fine with the deaths of adults [with children, wives, etc.])

Look one post above yours. Ignore his inappropriate post. Start a new thread if you want to debate the merits of stem cell research. This is not the place. I'm going to be pissed if I have to lock this thread because people can't shake their head in disgust and get back t the business of the topic at hand.

My friend got a copy of the LA times and in 3rd period today, he came up to me "Christopher Reeve is dead"

First I thought he was joking because this guy usually jokes around a lot.
Then I saw that he wasn't laughing and he was serious. He showed me the article/obituary and it was truly sad.

Rest in Peace.

Ok sorry Thinkinsane, but I was just thinking insane, and was utterly disgusted with this poster's comment. I really wasn't trying to turn this into a stem cell debate, that's why my afterthought was in parenthesis.

-back to topic

Christopher Reeve, You made a GREAT superman, and an even better advocate for the folks in your situation. I truly feel if you'd have been able to continue, you would have walked again and been an even greater inspiration to the rest of us. But you did enough.

(tounge in cheek) Please help superchicken see the error of her(his) ways...

and rest in peace.

Well, it sucks that he died, and I am sure he was a nice man, BUT:

People FAR LESS FORTUNATE die every day of much worse diseases. People who never benefitted from making millions of dollars off horrible movies.

I find it interesting how a celebrity is mourned and made out to be some kind of hero or something.

Mr. Reeve only cared about other people with this affliction AFTER he was struck with it.

How many causes was he fighting for PRIOR to his affliction?

Let's applaud somebody who fights these diseases from childhood with little or no monetary means to do so.

Such as...?

We're all pretty much guilty of this - it's usally all about us until life/reality slaps us in the face and we modify our outlook. Sometimes we see it through a tragic event, like Christopher Reeve did. Regardless of the means that brought him to his view (and I think it truely is irrelevant), he did do a lot of good for those with spinal injuries and inspired many people to overcome dehabilitating health issues. Tarnishing that seems petty to say the least.

I just thought of a funny analogy - remember that story about Newton being hit on the head by an apple and then pondering gravity? Well, maybe Newton should have thought of that before the apple hit him on the head and been proactive. Instead, he waited till the issue clubbed him over the head, and then he took it to heart.

On another note, superman was a special super hero, one that doesn't play well in todays society (our super heros are suppose to be conflicted, not mostly invincible), but also one that nearly everyone could look up to. He stood for everything that was suppose to be right in the world. The fact that we have a 2 page thread about the man who played that role is probably shocking only in that it is so short - we have freakin' threads that are miles long about absolutely nothing. When we have a chance to remember someone who embodied so much and reflect on what we gained and lost, I think we should do it.

What exactly did he embody? He was an actor! Playing a part! What did you gain from Mr. Reeve? Or his Superman character? I guess I just don't get the big deal.

This is going to turn into the same type of debate when people don't get why I liked Transformers the TV cartoon series.

"But they're not REAL."

So? Fiction books aren't real. The authors aren't writing things that really happened - that doesn't mean they aren't important and socially relevant.

Here's what I suggest - find your person that you want to heroize (or don't if you're against that whole practice) and tell people about them and how great they are. Tell us! Heck, I'll comment on what great stuff they're doing and praise them as well. This just sounds like criticizing someone for not eating their dinner because there are poor African children starving... as if eating your dinner would magically make them not starve.
