[dreaming]

A return of NeXT!!

I have been thinking about it recently, and to me at least it is not so silly a proposition...

The benefits of X86 are slipping away daily as both IBM and AMD are launching 64Bit chips, so I can't see a reason to go the way of Intel...

But,

What about enterprise/big iron servers with Opterons, running Linux or Marklar? Ideal for companies such as Pixar who have ported their Renderman software to Linux... it would all fit in so well with the recent Shake etc purchases...

The people who were around to buy the NeXT machines I suspect are now further up the chain in large companies, and know the brand, and how cool it was, and also it wouldn't have the whole 'Apple baggage'.

It diversifies Apples chip lines, and also puts them into a new product field without messing with the Apple and Macintosh brands...

I could see the black X of Panther running on a Back NeXT 'X-Serve' style machine now...

Just a thought...

Peace,

Marc

AMD Athlon64/Opteron = x86-64 = x86
