Here we go. The playoffs start in 3 days. Let's have our own little thread for it. And let's retire that silly Go Sharks other thread, that will unfortunately by obsolete comes 2nd round .
The Wings are not on a roll to say the least, but I think they got the easiest matchup they could hope for (well I hope). I still like their chance to come out of the West conference. I am watching the Ducks (which are going to pound the Sharks to oblivion) and the Canucks with some concern.
In the east, the Penguins and the Hurricanes are on a roll. Great offence for the Pens, hot hot goalie for the 'Canes. What will the Bruins do? dunno. The Devils, Rangers, and Flyers are as good as gone.
So, since I like to give the opportunity to people to make fun of me, here are my first round predictions ( Wings will repeat anyways. Right? Right?).
Sharks-Ducks : Ducks in 7
Wings-Jackets : Wings in 6
Canucks-Blues: Canucks in 5
Hawks-Flame : Hawks in 5
Bruins-Habs : Habs in 7 (!)
Caps-Rangers : Caps in 4
Devils-'Canes : Canes in 5
Flyers-Pens : Pens in 6
Wow do I ever look silly!

Yeah, but they're a young team. I think it's fair to say that young, talented teams usually need to get schlocked in the playoffs once or twice before they realize that it's really a different type of game.
Both the Hawks and the Blues are sort of in that situation... it'll be interesting to see how they respond, because the teams they're facing are both pretty "tough and tested."

The Avs are gonna...
...well, I guess they're gonna pick third in the draft. Sigh. Guess I'll pull for the Sharks. Maybe Habs too. The Canadian folks need to be reminded what the Stanley Cup looks like.

Those poor poor Avs. Maybe now they will have to build their own winning team rather then inheriting one.

GO HABS GO!! They've got a lot to prove this playoff season, but I'm going to be an optimist and pick them to just barely squeek by the Bruins in seven games before likely getting torched in the second round... kind of like last year.

The Canadiens have no shot to get past the Bruins this year. The Bruins just have WAY too much depth and talent at forward. The Canadiens have 2-3 scorers, the B's have 7 guys with 20+ goals this year. You shut down one line, there are two more waiting, plus the defensemen score for the Bruins too.
Let's not forget the only serious choice for winning the Vezina Trophy, Tim Thomas! League leader in GAA and Save percentage, it's a no brainer for sure.
Go Bruins!!

I'm noticing a distinct lack of Sharks-related echo up on this thang.......
I agree, my Canadians don't have much of a chance I don't think.

Yep, Pens are looking good, although Fleury stood on his head that game to keep it that way.
But Calgary has to step it up tonight! I think they were the better team for most of the first game, and just lost it at the end. With a young team like Chicago you don't want to give them confidence, though... so if they don't stop them tonight, I can't help thinking that the Flames are done (and Iginla is killing me in my pool, haha!).

My goal was for them to get the President's Cup, I'm not too concerned if they don't win the Stanley's Cup.
They seem to be lacking in conviction. Dunno why. Meh.

It's ALL about the Stanley Cup. It doesn't matter how many President's Cups a team manages to win, if they didn't win Lord Stanley, they didn't win anything at all.

x2, even winning the conference and going to the Stanley Cup isn't anything, the Wales/Campbell trophy doesn't even mean enough to be touched prior to the cup series.

Granted all I have seen of them playing in this postseason is today's second period, but the Pens will fail for the same reason that they did last year, i.e. poor defense that an average goaltending can't bail out. Gonchar is old and slow, Letang is not there yet. Gill and Orpik are liabilities in their own end.
And still based on today's game, what happened to the concept of tape-to-tape passing???

"Baby steps"?? What are you talking about? San Jose has been a top contender in the West for years now. Your core is starting to push 30. Your goalie is almost 34. Your "veteran playoff experience" is close to retiring. Winning the President's Trophy means exactly squat – no one remembers it, period. No one remembers when Ottawa was winning it, and got kicked out of the playoffs. No one cares.
"Baby steps" for San Jose is beating playoff teams they're supposed to beat. Let's hope they pick it up tonight.

Bang On. San Jose has been "baby stepping" it for at at least 4 or 5 seasons now. The day they traded for Joe Thornton was the day, imo, that they officially became a true Stanley Cup contender and any other accolades became meaningless. They're all grown up, time to make a serious playoff run.
Their biggest problem, of course, may very well end up being that when it came time to chose a marquis player to add, they chose Joe Thornton - the biggest playoff choke artist in recent hockey history.

I predicted it would be so earlier in this thread, but in 7 games...
Anyhow, I am sorry for our Sharks resident fan (there seems to bo one only right?) but this looks more and more like what happened to the Wings against the same Ducks (well I guess they still were Mighty back in the days) in 2003. Close games that the Ducks manage to win with an upstart goalie (Giguere at the time, Hiller now) that stops almost everything. Despite outshooting the Ducks by at least 10 goals per game, the Wings were swept...
I'll add that in spite of enjoying the Sharks' trouble, I can't help thinking that would the Ducks and the Wings win their series they would meet in the next round....

This is the first year with a new coach, though. Seems like a coaching change is what they needed. Now they need to work on that whole post season choke thing.
Ducks will probably sweep them.

Why would you say that? No confidence? They've run into a hot goalie, that's all; they're outplaying the Ducks for the most part. Now they need to learn how to get Hiller off his game.
Boston-Montreal, on the other hand, is a totally different story.

Pens up 3-1 in the series.
It was an exciting game but Fleury stood on his head.
Flyers had 46 shots on net, 8 powerplays, and ....1 goal?

So the trick to defeating the Ducks is to check them into the ground, beat the crap out of them, then have 20 shots on goal every period.
Sounds like a plan.
