i'd prefer the biweekly rather than bimonthly, imagine having to wait for every other month to get paid.

I think he means twice-a-month, which is the way my work does it.

So why do we use semi-anual to mean twice a year?

Bi weekly means every other week. Semi monthly also means (about) every other week.

Bi monthly means every other month.

The Wikipedia agrees with me.

Woah that would suck if I got paid every other week. Although I would definitely force me to spend less, as I would feel poorer.

Popular usage has led to both meanings for biweekly and bimonthly being correct. To be clear, you really should say either 'twice a month' or 'every other month.' Additionally, you could be paid every two weeks, which is a whole other beast. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming

My wife gets paid every week. I would find it more of a hassle then anything. Twice a moth is fine if you are even halfway decent with your money handling skills.

"Semi-monthly" is a pain too. It's not every other week, but rather on specific dates-dates that get adjusted so they will be normal business days. So you can't just pop down the calendar and say "payday, not payday, payday, not payday" a week at a time. And when you get paid every-other-week, you get some "free" paydays; these are the third payday in a month. It works out to 26 paychecks when paid biweekly, but only 24 when paid semi-monthly. While the money may be exactly the same, it's a hassle anyway.

It's better to get paid twice a month than every other week. All of your bills are based on months, not weeks. Getting paid on a month based interval better aligns your income with your expenses. While people generally do some things like grocery shopping on a weekly basis, it is minor in comparison with rent/mortgage, car payments, utilities, etc.

When you get paid on a week based interval, your income and your expenses get out of alignment. If your income were equal to your expenses annually, then you would have periods of declining bank balances that were made up for during the two months that you get an "extra" check. Obviously, income and expenses aren't going to be equal, but the general concept of a net loss in 5 out of 6 months remains.

I would reverse the polarity in that situation.

I think it would work better if it were based on weeks instead of dates. For a long time, I got paid on the 1st and the 15th, or the business day after those-except when it was the business day before the 1st or the 15th. I guess my issue is more about how variable my paydays were than about the number of them every month.

If they were "the first and third Firday of the month," or something like "the first business day of the month and the first business day after the 14th," it would be much simpler.

You're right about how bills are based on months, but having your payday vary because of Federal holidays and other odd stuff makes it much more difficult to manage your money.

Now I get paid once a month, on the first, or the business day BEFORE that if the 1st is a holiday or weekend. I can deal with that because there's only two rules. More paydays mean more rules... It gets confusing.

I get a paycheck once every two weeks. At least two months a year are "bonus months" when I get three paychecks in a month. I'm used to it: I budget as if I get two paychecks a month, and the extra paychecks can be used for "unexpected" expenses (like the $1K I had to put into my Jetta over the last few months...)

At my last job in NYC I was paid on the 15th and last day of every month. Once direct deposit kicked in though I stopped caring. At previous jobs I was paid every other friday.

FWIW, state and federal law may require a certain frequency of payment. Here in Maryland, business must pay employees at least twice a month, though it can be less frequent if the employee prefers and the employer also agrees. (The employer cannot, however, require the employee to accept paychecks less frequently than twice a month.)
