does it cause excessive heat if you're using it as extended desktop for just basic usage like surfing and aiming and whatnot?

No reason it should heat up. And the maximum external resolution is 1920x1200.

I run my macbook and this sony :

Does not produce any more heat than a single monitor setup. Extended desktop is a must too. I;d myself if all I had was the 13". I like feeling spread out.
