Alright, I'll admit up front that I'm new to the Classic environtment. I've been asked for help with a flakey server. The issue: It will just shut down on its own. When restarted, file sharing does not restart, it must be started manually.

When the owners of the server asked the company who installed it (and had been supporting it until a few months ago), he said this is caused by a hard drive that needs to be replaced. I find this suspicious, as the drive in question doesn't have any system files on it (it was a later addition just for sharing files). Besides that, I've been working on PC's and Windows servers for years, and I've never seen a case where a bad hard drive can cause a server to go down.

The drive in question had previously had a corrupted file on it, which caused them some trouble. After removing the file and running disk utilities on the drive, it now seems fine, there are now indications of any problems.

As I said, I'm new to Macs and older Mac hardware, so maybe it's more sensitive to impending drive failure. Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Hi Michael, a few questions.

What kind of server is it running?

By Classic, do you mean OS 9 or the Classic environment in OS X?
