I want to start a collection but I can't decide on what to collect.
I have over 200 books but they don't count. I'm thinking of going with mechanical pencils, or maybe 3D puzzles.
Do you collect anything? What? How many do you have?

I may be wrong, but a true collector doesn't think they want to start collecting something, they just do because they are passionate about the subject they are collecting.

Not anymore.. When I was younger, I collected stamps, and butterflies. Nowadays I only "collect" strange coins in a jar, when I see them, but nothing official.

It's an OK collection. Not a lot of unique or vintage items. I see a lot of newer stuff.

Being a firefighter I collect different patches from different fire dept's across the US. It's amazingly easy, just walk up to a firehouse and ask them if they have any patches they want to trade and you can buy some off of ebay. I have been collecting for the past 3 years and I love it.

I have a ton of vintage stuff. I collect anything and everything Star Wars, and I love focusing a lot of my attention toward army-building. Check out all the vintage Biker Scouts and AT-AT Drivers in this picture...

I don't really collect anything. I do have a ton of Apple posters, but the oldest is an Intel iMac one, so really nothing that old.

I used to do this back when the stubs were teeny-tiny, like a postage stamp. My stack was a good inch-and-a-half high too.
Once they switched to the larger tickets (early 90s) it didn't have the same cachet for whatever reason.

Maps.
Although I'm not conscientious of the fact when I'm doing it. It's not like I *must* have a map of every single city I've visited. Only the ones that really resonated with me. Maps of museum galleries. of National Geographic charts. of Coachella. And they're all kept nicely folded in a box that I will probably never share with anyone else. They're for my pleasurable viewing - no one else's. Is that strange?

The only thing I collect is my hair as it falls out of my head
oh wait that's not funny, I'm going bald
seriously I don't collect anything and I echo Nivag's sentiments.
People who collect stuff do so because they're passionate about the subjects. They love baseball and collect baseball cards. They're into star wars and so they collect that. etc. To be honest I'm not sure I know anyone who wants to collect for the shear enjoyment of collecting.
The only recommendation I could give is go with stamps or coins. People seem to be hooked on doing those things.

Well, if anyone remembers the Boy Scouts, they have the Boy Scout Hand Book... well, being the Navy, the Navy has the Bluejacket's Manual they give to new recruits in Boot Camp. I have a small collection of them ranging from 1917 and 1918, and some from the 40's, 50', and 60's.

I collect gold and platinum coins. Believe it or not, it used to not be that expensive if you got little ones. I won't be collecting many more of them unless the prices of these metals goes down. Can't afford it anymore.

Indeed. The price of gold per ounce is high right now. Great for my gold & precious metals portfolio, not so great if I want to buy coins.

I collect "Studio Scale" special effects models.
Here's a picture of the Jupiter 2 from "Lost in Space" It is a second generation copy of the actual SPFX model.
