I used to diss Norton Utilities until it saved my butt, recovering an erased Powerbook. Got everything back.

I used to not diss Norton Utilities until it screwed up my perfectly-working drive which showed no errors in any other disk utilities, until Norton made it unmountable.

Anyway: Liquidity, Data Rescue is indeed your best bet. Download it from http://www.prosofteng.com .

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
