Once upon a time, I owned an old version of GoLive...which was so-so. I've heard it's gotten a lot better, but now that I'm in the market for a web-design/editing product, is GoLive the way to go? Or is Dreamweaver better?

I happen to really like the GoLive CS. But I seem to crash it a lot.

but just writing your own code in BBEdit beats it all.

I would use BBedit if it had tag completion (not a stupid shortcut to close current tag) and a file browser window. Without those features, BBedit is useless to me. For a strict hand coder like myself, the only alternative on the Mac is Dreamweaver or Golive.

Just remember, the only Trial for Golive is version 6, which sucked. But everything I've seen about Golive CS makes it seem really good.

Also, Dreamweaver 2004 is very very very slow right now with any amount of CSS or nested tables.

Up to this moment, I think we need to wait another month to get good trials.

And I use neither CSS or nested tables and it's still dog slow. I hope there's an update soon otherwise I'm going to pull out what's left of my hair.

After reading this thread I thought I would download some of the Macromedia Trial's.

I had to laugh when I saw the Dreamweaver Installer Icon (whether this is an accident from app association through Adobe CS's installation or something else...I dunno)

Just checked it out, looks pretty good. Is there any way to drag images from the file browser window into the code editor view to generate an img tag?

nope, that it does not do. since it wasn't developed for html purposes, there are some weaknesses. the xml/html plugin (jedit has a pretty expansive plugin library) provides some extra editing functionality and source viewing/navigation but it doesn't handle drag and drop (i think drag and drop functionalities are being implemented into the new beta version). also, since it is a java app, the key bindings behave a bit differently than what we're used to in cocoa applications (of course i predominantly use it on a pc at work so the little bit of consistency when i come home is actually kind of nice...)

it does however handle file browsing (local/ftp/sftp) and multiple file editing/searching wonderfully and its syntax highlighting is extremely customizable.

anyways, give it a try...

Yeah, this is worth keeping just for the multiple views and tabbed window environment. The file browser is also nice.

Go DreamWeaver. It's more widely used which could help with tutorials, extensions etc.

depends on the app...

i tend to agree regarding performance and interface of java gui apps. there is some good software out there though, and jedit has consistently worked well for me, on all platforms.
