Hi, I am having problems adding a memory chip to my early model 2001 633 graphite imac. I ordered the machine with the standard 128 and added 64, that works fine. I recently ordered a 512MB chip from OWC. The chip i ordered was a cl2 100 chip and they instead sent me a CL3 133 chip, i was ticked off but that's a long story...I'm very dissapointed in OWC's advertising practices. Anyway, I tried to install the chip and followed apples instructions to the T. I took out the 64 chip located in the second slot and replaced it with the 512 and it seemed to install fine. When I tried to boot the machine up, it gets stuck just after the os logo and an error message appears:

"Illegal Instruction- to temporarily turn off extension, restart and hold down the shift key." Why, I don't know. I tried that and it does nothing, but, turn off the extensions. I have tried reinserting the chip several times and finally just put the old 64 back in and its working fine again. Why won't it except the chip? Did I forget something? is there a way to get past this error message, or is it just the chip. Apple specs and many apple useres have told me 133 chips will work just fine, except of course that it will work at 100 and may be a little slower. To my way of thinking the extra 512 will certainly still work faster than the additional 64 i had before.

I would really appreciate your help so I do not have to deal with those rip offs again at OWC. Many Thanks in advance people.

Huh? What do you mean an early 633 Graphite iMac? Either way, It must be a slot loader, and they all accept the same type of memory modules. Check you have the latest FirmWare updates.. If that doesn't help. You either have the wrong type of memory module, or it's faulty.

That chip should work in that machine. And if it wasn't the correct specs the iMac would ignore it and boot fine but you would just see be using the original 128MB. So, it sounds like your chip is bad or somehow got damaged. Try to find another machine to test it in.

BTW, when a PC133 CL3 chip is run at PC100 it is also then CL2. So in this case OWC was correct in saying it didn't matter, you still have a PC100 CL2 module.

This sounds like either a bad chip, or you were sold the wrong one. I've sold many PC133 chips to use in iMacs (350Mhz and faster), and I use 4 256Mb PC133s in my G4/400, which came spec'd with PC100 memory. The Specialist stores I work at don't even sell PC100 chips any more; we use strictly 133s.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

This is just a hunch, but a lot of machines like to have the higher capacity DIMM in the first slot. That would require you to take the 128 out of slot 1, put the 512 in slot 1, then put the 128 in slot 2. I think it's worth a try before you get too fed up and send the 512 back.
