MBPs are used as desktop workstations by many. Why is it that MBPs don't sport ECC/Buffered memory?

Just because people use them as desktop/workstations doesn't mean they are supposed to match every spec of one. They also don't support 3.5" hard drives. If people find them robust enough to use as a desktop replacement that's a positive thing but it doesn't mean Apple ought to engineer it to turn in to that. As of several months ago, there were no laptops that I know of that had ECC memory -- are there some now that do?

Because Intel/nVidia's mobile chipsets don't support ECC memory.

The mobile chipsets don't support it because there's no demand.

Notebooks and workstations are geared at different tasks. It's no surprise they don't use the same components.
