Ok so maybe I was misinformed but I was under the impression that if you purchased and downloaded a CD from iTunes then the price was 9.99. Unless of course the album was two cds... But 16.99 for the new Coldplay album and only 12 tracks... There are several other CDs on iTunes that are over 9.99. Actually all of the Coldplay albums are expensive. I can go to Target get the album, digitize it, and get to look at the CD insert... Come on Apple.

This has been there since day one. Some albums are $9.98 for all tracks, even if there are more than 10. Some are $.99 each, and they charge "full price" for the album. This is most surely from the record labels. Just like they can dictate which albums you can download fully, and which ones you can only get selected tracks from.
I hate the inconsistencies of it all. But that's the RIAA for ya!

When there's an album priced like that, I usually send a complaint via the feedback form, and then go buy it at a store if I really want it.

You can't buy Everythings Not Lost unless you buy the album. Its better just to buy the DVD/CD from Amazon.

That is undoubtedly the highest price I've seen thus far for an album that wasn't a double set. Having said that, I much prefer the "Album Only" approach to that "Partial Album" crap. With the former, the labels only allow the purchase of the hit singles with a full album purchase ... but at least the user has the option to buy or not. When they don't even include tracks with that "Partial Album" foolishness, you have no choice but to buy the CD when you want the whole thing. Why kill a sale? Make the single "Album Only" if you want to. Charge a higher price for the whole album if you want to. But at least give the user the option. Personally, I'm into the convenience on the ITMS. That is, if I could buy the entire album from the ITMS for the same price or less than I could get the CD from Amazon or Best Buy .... then I'm going to go the ITMS route because it 1) Saves me a trip to the store or delivery wait and 2) All I 'm going to do is rip it into iTunes anyway and toss the CD in a box.
I just don't understand the rationale behind this "Partial Album" crap. I send Apple nasty feedback every time I encounter it on an album I want to buy.

Remember that Apple isn't at fault for all of this. They're at the mercy of the record companies in terms of what's offered, price, etc. I'm sure Apple would love to offer all complete albums, but it's not their choice. Hopefully, as the Store gets more popular, the record companies will loosen up a bit.

This R.E.M. album also priced over $9.99. I think this is a mistake on Apple's part.
At $9.99 the above album is reasonable. At $11.99 I'd just buy the CD next time I'm at WalMart or Sams Club.

Generally if I want a song or two (or three) I buy them on iTunes. If I want an entire CD then I head to the store.

May be I am wrong..
Did Steve mention that the Internet is perfect for delivering music?
I guess some iTMS users want to listen to the music they bought quickly. iTMS nails that. IMHO, if I really a big fan of specific musician, I definitely go out any buy the actual CD rather than download the whole album.
