For me, I suppose it is something of a closet: many of the people I hang out with would want little or nothing to do with me if they knew all of my political beliefs, and not always without good reason. I choose my friends because they're interesting to be around, not because of their politics, but the nation has become so ridiculously polarized that I realize many people can't bring themselves to do that. To liberals, I'm conservative scum; to conservatives, I'm liberal scum. So I keep my politics to myself, not unlike my religion. It's sad that in an age of free expression I find myself unable to express my own beliefs except when my name can't be tied to them. It's why I find the rights to privacy and anonymity so important, though; without them, I wouldn't be able to express my beliefs at all.
