I want to set up a VPN to route my email and web browsing through while on public wi-fi. My home computer will be the VPN server. How can this be done?

My mobile machine is an MBP C2D running 10.4.

My home computer is a Macmini C2D. Other details:
running 10.4
connected via ethernet
set up Lighthouse.app to deal with port forwarding
set up an account with dyndns to overcome the mini's dynamic IP address

Currently I can access my mini via SSH and with Apple Remote Desktop as well as access the personal web server.

I prefer to use my home computer as a VPN server versus a 3rd party such as Anchorfree for security reasons.

I do not have OS X Server and would prefer not to run Linux in virtualization.

Any suggestions?

An SSH SOCKS proxy will do what you want. You already have much of the setup done. You create the SOCKS proxy on your home machine by logging on from your remote machine using SSH.

The details are here:

Once set up, just set your browser and email app to use the SOCKS proxy. Your traffic will be encrypted and tunneled between your laptop and home computer, exiting at your home (trusted) network.
