Maybe it's the economy but I've never seen a year where I've heard so many people comment they don't give a shit.

Edit: and I'll second your fake holiday bullshit.

If there is anything more annoying than ooey-gooey in lurve couples on Valentine's Day, it's the people who aggressively proclaim how much they don't care about it.

A perfect getway is only 1x or 2x AAPL shares; I think that the cupid marketing machine has become ineffective in our age bracket (aka not teens).

I don't think anyone here is proclaiming they don't care about it, if that's what you're remarking.

Really, I could have sworn that's what the "just another day" "bullshit" was about. Perhaps "aggressively" was too strong a word. Actively, maybe.

Eh, we care enough to call bull when we see it.

Really, I hate fake commercial holidays. If you love someone there's no reason you can't do it any other day of the year. Hell, to me the spontaneity makes it a much more meaningful act.

It's at this point I should count my luck that all my post HS SOs were equally down on Valentine's.

My current g/f actually specifically told me not to get her anything, which is good for me because I hate going to those types of stores anyways.

I thought montages were supposed to reduce costs, not double them.

I'm expecting the usual card, and that's ok. Trying to be frugal. Babysitters are expensive.

That restaurant looks nice Laminar. Ah, I remember those days.

This. I abhor birthdays and holidays. I shower my partner with love and gifts... at my discretion ... not because of an arbitrary date on the calendar.

There's nothing more romantic than a big 12" meatball sub next to a tuna melt.

Lam, I think it would be nice if we could get a good pic of you eating a sub or any other type of food.

Bwaaa haaa haaaa haaa! Outstanding references, folks.

I don't know that Hallmark "created" this as a holiday. It is, after all, an old Catholic feast day. But greeting card companies sure have helped make it a bigger thing. And it's not only big in our culture; it's huge in Japan too, with different customs.

As for the romance part, I get my wife a card as an excuse to be mushy with her. I get her flowers whenever, I get her chocolate whenever. I give her cards that say "I love you" whenever. Today I just do it with the rest of the crowd. Or rather, the rest of the crowd give these sorts of gifts with ME.

ghporter, make a fancy handwritten note that says "you're loved" roll it up and tie it with a ribbon in her favorite color; and place it under her pillow for her to find when she wakes.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already done something else "different." Plus we spent the whole weekend doing "couple things" - more than we would on any other random weekend. It's been a good Valentine's thing for both of us this time around.

I guess our definitions of "whenever" are different.

Mine, in this context, is "fairly regularly, without any specific date or external reason." We used to live a few blocks from a small flower shop; I'd buy some flowers for my wife on average once or twice a week on my way home from work. I've just sort of kept that tradition going-though not quite as regularly.

You just made me do an actual, physical facepalm. Complete with *graon* and everything. In case you’re wondering, graoning is what you do when you groan at particularly bad jokes.

We went to Raccoon River Brewery. They catered our wedding at Hotel Ft DSM, so that place had some nice personal significance. Last year we went to 801 Steak and Chophouse -- great food, but REALLY pricey.

She said she would've been happy with Overtime on 86th St, though; they've got the best onion rings in town.

Well Bistro Montage was the second most we've ever spent at a restaurant (the first was Fogo de Chão).

I was there for a company get-together a year or so ago, might have to go back and try the onion rings.
