It's a sad state of affairs I have to start this thread. I'm a Star Trek guy.

That said, doesn't look horrible.

The "guards" on the saber bugged me from first viewing. Guards are to protect one's own hand. Those will do a nice job slicing up the wielder.

That was my thought too, except I have that feeling about lightsabers in general. Way too easy to kill yourself trying to wield one.

Similarly, the cross guard presents the question why lightsaber tactics don't involve sliding down the edge of the other blade and lopping your opponent's fingers off.

If you use force powers (which I guess is what's keeping you from killing yourself in the first place) to stop that, then why bother with the crossguard?

That being said, low flying X-Wings? **** yeah.

Of the many things to hate about the prequels is the "dogfighting" was such an orgy of cgi I couldn't understand what the **** was going on.

Compare to the battle of Endor at the end of RotJ. More than enough ships to sell the scale of the event, but very easy to follow what was happening.

I really want that part to come back.

I know, I'll make the trailer in Lego, and put it on Youtube, it will be a unique and original thing that none else will do...

I like the new crucifix/swiss army light saber, though it seems a bit dangerous. (nice post subego)

But I can't wait to see this - I feel like a kid again just thinking about it.

When I saw that, I thought of Game of Thrones right away.

But overall, the visual language in the trailer nailed it. It says nothing of the story, but the graphics and the feel are very Star Wars-y.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I believe I read in one of the Zahn books that it was difficult for a Jedi (or Sith, I assume) to be harmed by their own lightsaber, it pretty much has to be intentional (Luke used his to cauterize one of his own wounds and remarked on how it was trying to resist making contact with him).

I like this design more:

According to the designer the crossguard blades aren't intersecting each other or the main blade, though they drew it in a way which implies the opposite, and makes the design not seem as cool.

Yes well practically speaking that would be just as annoying - your own sword constantly twisting in your hands to avoid cutting your own damn self.

I'm not really a huge fan of J.J. Abrams but he has made some "solid" movies. The trailer definitely nails the look and feel of the classics - they know what they're going for, anyway. And sub's linked George Lucas SE was hilarious and totally spot on.

I'm not sure where you're getting the "constantly twisting in your hands" kind of thing, they're jedi, not kids with claymores. They know where the blade is at all times and the lightsaber itself is precisely tuned to them, unless they're using someone else's and then it takes a while for that tuning process to occur, and even then it's never as connected to them as one they've made themselves.

Nerd alert! NERD ALERT!

Yeah, I always imagined it as your (magic) hands doing the twisting and turning. The force isn't moving the saber, it's moving you.

My favorite part, other than the bajillion TIE fighters at the end, is when the X-Wing pilot dodges Greedo shooting first.

Maybe this line of reasoning is exactly why we never saw it until now: this character is bad at The Force, so s/he devised this contraption as a stop-gap?

Sweet. The chick on the hover bike- looks like natalie portman. Can't be, right?

aha:

"And 22-year-old Ridley is coming off a stint appearing on the PBS series Mr. Selfridge, but is likely better known for being the daughter of Yvonne Ridley, the British journalist who was captured by the Taliban in 2001 and subsequently converted to Islam after her release.

No word on who Daisy will play in the new Star Wars film, but it might be worth mentioning that she looks a whole lot like Natalie Portman. Just saying."

Odd, Wikipedia has someone else as her mother : Daisy Ridley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia And the father information doesn't match.

I'm excited to see this one...for now. The teaser certainly teased some really interesting stuff.

As for the lightsaber, yes, guards are supposed to help protect the holder's hand, but what do you use to block a lightsaber? Another lightsaber, right? I don't know how else you'd (in the Star Wars universe) protect against a lightsaber blow toward the hand.

...from the obvious point that swordfighting with a sword that has 12-inch long fully sharpened cross guards inevitably means you must end up stabbing yourself, period. The cross guards have to be held parallel to your own body if your sword moves inward (and no point of your body like a knee or arm can be sticking out). Physically speaking that would be impossible to do in a real sword fight: at some point you must move so that the crossguard becomes self-goring. As you said, lightsabres have a strongly anti-masochistic stance, and it will resist doing so - meaning that the sword will twist in your hand.

Obvious point is obvious, good sir

Not really. I've swung a Scottish claymore a good bit and managed to be pretty effective without the guards (which were level, not angled) ever touching me, and I'm a rank amateur, I can only imagine that someone as proficient as a jedi would have even fewer issues. I think it's ingenious, lightsaber combatants who are largely accustomed to sabre techniques would be at a severe disadvantage, because every defense in sixte would be a potential dismember, meaning they would have to overextend to keep attacks in quarte (leaving them off balance), and every bind would be nerve wracking, to put it mildly.

I'm starting to stress out at the fact that I am arguing with people on the internet about lightsabres, but I should note that

1) the guards on a sword (claymore or otherwise) are not blade-sharp like a lightsabre; and
2) regardless, I thought that claymores were distinctive for their forward-sloping crossguard as depicted in Dakar's picture, lol?

Anyways, if you want to argue that a 90 degree blade-sharp crossguard is a Fine Idea for the wielder...using the example of a weapon that became functionally obsolete by the 1500s or 1600s because you couldn't use it as you would a lightsabre...then you can move on to the Sick Weapons subforum, I'm done here.

Also it had never really occurred to me before that the use of "sabre" in the lightsabre name is totally inappropriate....why not lightsword? Not cool enough for Lucas? Huh, had never thought about that.

I just want them to refer to the new one as a lightclaymore. And then see different variants proliferate all awkwardly named.

Oh yeah. My picture was of a lightsaber. Totally makes sense we need a pic of a metal sword to explain the idea.

I find it sux. I read those "Timothy Zahn" books, or whoever, thought the stories were identical. Right? Books are okay. Episode 1 is still great.

I would like to say that I'm pretty giddy about this.

I love what Abrams did to the Star Trek reboot, and if he gets the Star Wars mythology similarly right… I'm seeing more acting in those three shots of scared faces than in the entire prequel trilogy.

Well, JJ Abrams isn't afraid of making radical design choices, from the sword hilt to the soccer-ball droid to the popsicle speeder. Even John Boyega's stormtrooper outfit looks a bit odd, without the "knapsack" compartment on the back and just a gray dot instead.

They've finished principle photography, but we still don't know the names of the new characters. Seriously, go look at the IMDB page. It's amazing no character names have leaked out.

Couple of other thoughts:

The main female lead (Daisy Ridley) is probably the Jedi of the new cast. Having your main Jedi of the story be female is an interesting direction for Star Wars films. (Have we even had a female Jedi with a speaking part yet?) Will we get a lot of "mopey Jedi" stuff from her after Han and/or Leia get killed?

6"3" Gwendoline Christie from Game of Thrones is in this. Wouldn't it be cool if she was the villain holding that weird-looking lightsaber? (The "Sith" character is wearing a mask in the leaked shots, so it could be hiding her gender.) Or maybe she's playing a Wookie!

What's going on with the Empire/Remanent in this? Still kicking in some form after 30 years? Or are they only here as the tail end of galactic mopping-up operation, and a new villainous group will be the real enemy? Myself, I don't think I want to see a resurgent Empire or resurgent Sith as the main villains. I think I'd prefer the new dark force users having a new ethos and a new name.

"The Force Awakens" idea is making me nervous. I hope they don't suggest that the Force has been slumbering or something and is now becoming "conscious" again.

How much of the original cast will live to the end? Killing off Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewy in a single film doesn't feel very "Star Wars-y" to me. Will JJ Abrams have his "Search for Spock" moment as we watch the Millennium Falcon fall flaming from the sky, or will it get passed on to the new characters?

Will we see any Force ghosts, like Yoda? Did Leia ever learn to be a Jedi? Will we see her with a lightsaber or use any Force powers?

Not all claymores have a 45 degree guard, as a Google image search will readily show, and even an amateur can avoid being hit by the crossguard. Furthermore, if you're getting that stressed over trivial nerd talk, then you need to move on. Seriously.

With a sword, the crossguard is in the same plane as the cutting edge of the blade.

Lightsabers don't have a cutting edge along a single plane. They'll cut any which way.

Can't see most of the piccies in this thread at work, but to add to 'guardgate', katanas don't have much in terms of hand protection.
