Hi all, I am going to replace my 120 gb hardrive with one of these:
200GB 2.5" Seagate Momentus 7200.2 7200RPM... (ST9200420AS) at OWC
probably the largest fastest that will fit, and wondering:
1) can I stick the old 120 in an external case, and which case should I get?
2) is it unreasonable to ask the dealer where I get the drive (Apple-authorized) to replace the drive for me, and take the same partitions I already have and put them in the new drive? I have 80gig for mac and 40 gig for Bootcamp.
Well, thanks for any tips, as I am sure there are lots of folks who have done this...

Any 2.5" SATA enclosure is fine. As for installation, yes an Apple authorized provider will do it and probably transfer the contents of your old drive over, but you could also do that yourself afterward with Disk Utility on the Leopard disc (in case they say it costs extra and you don't wish to pay for it).

2.5" SATA enclosures
Hard drives are usually pretty pricey at local shops... I'd consider buying it online at Newegg (no reason to pay OWC's $25 markup) and just pay the local guy to install it. As Big Mac said you can do the transfer yourself.

so the process would be to clone old drive to the new drive in a new 2.5 sata case, then swap the drives - external to internal? thx.

u guys rock, thanks! I have another post in the consumer hardware section where I ask about getting harddrives for our studio, a mix of mbps, imacs, and pcs on a lan. i want to have some solution for all - for backup and video/audio editing but totally confused on what to get: NAS, eSata2, firewire800, whatever! Any thoughts there?

update, using winclone made the bootcamp drive unbootable outside of parallels PD. I get the HAL not found error. But all is well in PD! I guess u have to really reinstall XP somehow. Thinking now I will upgrade to Vista anyway on the PC side...oh well.
