One of the annoyances of being in college is my miserably low fixed income, which is why after my CC bill is paid next week I will have $54 in my personal savings account

And there will still be another CC bill next month, too.

I need a job.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about credit card bills.

Aren't you the same guy that's over at Ars talking about putting money away in ING and was looking at buying a car a few months ago?

Railhead approach: Oh no, I only have $54 + monthly amount of cash left. I have to be very careful about what I spend. I'll give myself X amount of cash each week, and that's what I have to spend. I'd better hope I don't get mugged while I have a chunk of cash in my pocket, because I'm screwed if that happens. It's not like it didn't happen last week outside my apartment building. I guess I won't have much money to spend at the food store that I haven't been to in over 3 months, but I can live without meat and cheese until I can find another ride there sometime in the next few months. Or I can take cash from this week and future weeks, get food now, and have less to spend the next few weeks.

Scott approach: Oh no, I only have $54 + monthly amount of cash left. I have to be very careful about what I spend. I'll give myself X amount of cash each week, and aim to spend less than that. If I happen to get mugged I'll be annoyed while I wait for a replacement CC, and at the loss of the $10 in my wallet, but I'll live. Cool, someone finally offered me a ride to the store, I can get some meat and cheese, and a few other products I eat. I'll have to spend less elsewhere, but I can charge this to the CC and just make sure I don't spend more than the Y that I have this month. If it means I don't buy much food the last week, oh well. While I'm at it, my CC is giving me 5% cash back at supermarkets, and 1% everywhere else. Thus, this month I'll still get $5-$10 "back" which will help me out, just like how I waited to request my last check until just now, and used that to help pay for my trip to visit my family for Thanksgiving.

Now Railhead is happy with his approach, and I'm happy with mine. Maybe one of these days a crack will open in his thick skull and he'll understand that just because someone has a credit card doesn't mean they spend more then they have. Until that day, whatever. I find it useful to aggregate all my purchases into one payment each month, since I get X each month, and it's easy to have it go to my account a few days before the CC bill is due. The cash back is nice, too.

I use ING for my cash, yes.
I did look into buying a car over the summer, as my internship was 2 hours away via public transportation, and 30 minutes via car. I ended up not getting the car. I also put everything I earned from that internship into my IRA. Better to be broke now and not later, me says

You saying you're looking but can't find one? or just too lazy to look? I can't imagine not being able to find one on or around campus. I worked at Wells/Linson when I was there (is that complex still there?).. basically got paid to do my homework.

You're the one that said you had bills coming and you seem worried about it to the point of starting a thread about it.

As for the other tripe you posted, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Bored and felt like ranting. In your case, it would be "Bleh, I have to buy food this month and I don't have much money to do it." I moved out of an apartment last year and as a result my expenses went up by $175/month, but I didn't increase what I get each month. Now I actually have to watch my spending, as my expenses will end up about $100 above what I have each month if I don't pay attention to what I'm spending and just buy normally. Thus, I'm forced to really watch my budget.

As for the rest of what I posted, I said you have no idea of why people use credit cards. I know you don't understand it, it wasn't really for you. I have illusions of you understanding.
The meat / cheese thing is that today I finally get to go to the store where I can get that, and a few other things. There's no store nearby that sells those products.

buy an xbox 360 with your credit card, if its even accepted, then sell it on ebay and get about 200-300 bucks profit.

wait, that wont accomplish anything, you'll just use the profit to pay off the CC. Hmmm, you try panhandling in your spare time?

Just kidding, I wouldn't do that to you (or anyone else).

We have all been through that situation. A job is a good idea. Parents also come in handy.

I've got a campus job pulling about $400 a month. I just budget every month. This month is going to be tight for Christmas buying and flying down to Cupertino, but I just put aside money last month, and I'll have enough for everything on payday this month.

I get paid $18 an hour during the summers but all that goes away to college. Nothing like having a big fat savings account looking at you and not being able to touch it.

I've got 2 cookbooks to print and bind before Christmas to the tune of $12,000.

It's gonna be a really good Christmas this year.

The Sky Captain and I just bought a Beechcraft Sundowner yesterday and I had to cough up $28,000 for my half. I was flat broke and didn't know what I was gonna do because the wifey didn't know.

I made good money on my plasma in college. Could get around $200 every 14 days or so and it only took about 30 minutes each time.

Well you certainly are in the minority and while my credit card debt is I have trouble making ends meet - more so now that my wife is expecting. I have empathy with others who also have trouble making ends meet - basically there by the grace of God I go, it wouldn't take much of a push to make my situation extreme.

I used to think I missed college and disliked working. Then I realized I liked having money and that my job isn`t so bad and in reality, college isn`t that great.

Good luck with your budgeting. Try whoring yourself out to the girls on campus. Its worth a shot. That or do freelance tech support. Either way it whoring.

Though tech support may make you more money....

I ended up spending about $90 on food and supplies. Cheese is expensive $20 for cheese. And not even fancy cheese. $3.38 for 1/4 pound of corned beef. *grumbles about the high cost of food*

Meat and cheese are expensive.

Suck on a potato.

I also am broke. I'm getting about ÂŁ175 after tax a week.

My rent is ÂŁ200 a month.

Christmas is coming up.

I have ÂŁ860 on my credit card, the limit is ÂŁ800

Oh, and the cable bill is a week overdue, another ÂŁ25.

At least I don't have a mobile phone bill this month or next month, I'm in credit !!!

Everyone has bills to pay. Me included.

But, I don't have any credit cards. Beginning two years ago I paid off every credit card we had. It was a Christmas gift to my family, actually. NO DEBT. It was a big thing to do, since we had several balances, but we had to get rid of it. Now we have no debt other than a mortgage payment, utilities, the usual month-to-month living expenditures. Since then everything we've bought is cash.

However, life is just expensive, period. Our power bill averages about $250 a month. (Yes, that's an average bill here where we live.) Phone bill and DSL, another $100. Cell bill $100. Cable, $75. Water/sewer is $40. It's about $600 just for basic utilities in our house, per month. That's $7200 a year for utilities alone. That doesn't include my insurance bills.

That doesn't include mortgage, groceries, or anything else.

LIFE IS EXPENSIVE.

Cody, maybe you should shop around.

There's no way a phone bill and DSL should add up to $100.
What cell phone plan do you have? 5000 anytime minutes?
Cable @ $75, eh? I'm guessing you have Digital Cable with additional perks?

No. I have a phone bill with unlimited long distance. $69. DSL is $25. Add mandatory taxes, such as paying for phones for poor people (yes, it's on the bill), call waiting, and it's $100.

Our basic land line in my area, with nothing added, is $29.

My cell phone bill is $79 a month for 2000 minutes. Add taxes and it's $100.

Cable through Adelphia sucks and sucks bad. It keeps going up. Cable, with NOTHING extra, is $60 a month. Sorry, I was $15 off - I just checked. No, it's not digital cable. Regular crappy cable.

we use credit cards for convenience, and some pay you back small percentages or bonus points, however, we always pay them off every month.

I put everything on my MasterCard. I pay it all off every month. I get money through UPromise if I do it that way. I get around $500-600/year for my kids' college.

DSL, cell phones, and cable TV are not "basic utilities". I'm sorry, but they just aren't. Unlimited long distance is a luxury. It irks me when I read threads where people that have very little money act as if they have to pay these bills. I realize that you are not the one stating that you don't have any money, and that you haven't given any indication that you are financially strapped. I'm just clarifying your statement because it's misleading.

You could get that phone bill down to $40. Drop the cell phone ($100), drop the cable ($60), and drop the DSL ($30). That's $220/month right there.

Your electric bill is largely that high due to running your AC (I'm pretty sure you live in Florida, and I do too). I'm not going to say turn it off because it is damn hot in Florida, but running it at 80 degrees will help out a ton. If you have Florida Power, they will actually come out to your house and assess where your power consumption is excessive. I'm quite aware of power savings as I recently moved and my power bill went from $175/month to $350/month (same city, only slightly larger house). I've since replaced the AC and made some insulating changes to the house. Bill came down to $250/month, but I'm still working on it (of course, it's winter so the bills are very low right now).

I love it when people tell me how to live. Or tell me what my "basic needs" are. My air conditioner is brand new - replaced 6 months ago - and my energy use went down about $75 a month.

DSL assists in the way I make a living. Cell phone assists in the way I make a living. Cable TV is the ONLY way to get television where I live. So, if you want to say that television is a "luxury" then yeah, I guess it is. I have the very basic cable package. I hardly call it a luxury but whatever.

That is awesome Cody. I just have Basic Cable myself. Things for your job is a necessity. You are very productive.

I have credit cards, they are very convient. Pay them off in full every month.

I wasn't telling *you* how to live. I tried to clarify that. You don't appear to be in the situation that the thread starter is in, so you can do as you please. I was simply pointing out that people often complain of having little to no money yet they cling to things that could easily be trimmed. Heck, a cell phone and a DSL line weren't even available 10 years ago and people got along fine. There are people who truly have little money, and then there are people who simply consume too much for their income level. I'm not saying that you are either one. If you have the money, buy whatever the hell you want.

Palm Harbor is an expensive place to live, too.

As far as the thread starter I'll tell you what I'd do: Go paint houses. That's one of the jobs I held in college. I loved it. Got to make $14 an hour and they worked with my schedule. I worked four hours a day, made $60 x 4 a week. That's $1000 a month. Only 4 hour shifts were great. The time flew by, had no one hanging over my shoulder (basically just showed up), we listened to great music, brought our food and beverages along, and we had a good time.
