Even if they were going to have $200 players this year, they would be stupid to admit that now.

Paging Gomac.

Downloads haven't arrived at a theater near you yet - Engadget HD

"more than half polled didn't even know movie downloads exist; more than a third know about but have never tried them; and less than 10-percent regularly download movies. And what, pray tell, is the biggest feature consumers are looking for? A little something called "quality of content," a.k.a. "more titles, please." Shocker, right? Don't get us wrong, we're all for downloadable content. But beyond the chicken-and-egg problem of getting studio support to attract more customers to get studio support, there are other outstanding issues as well. Until bandwidth is a non-issue and crazy DRM restrictions are gone, physical media makes good sense to consumers and businesses alike."

I'm willing to bet all the $200 players will be 1.0 players.

No, because as of last year, Blu-ray made 1.1 mandatory for all new players. 1.0 is officially dead.

They can no longer create new 1.0 models. But they can continue to produce the current 1.0 models.

Steve on Apple TV:

Everybody's tried to make a great product for the living room. Microsoft's tried, we've tried -- everybody's tried. And everybody's failed. We failed, so far.

So there's a whole bunch of people that have tried, and every single one of them's failed, including us. And that's why I call it a hobby. It's not a business yet, it's a hobby.

I have very little faith in anything "mandatory" for Blu-Ray. Yes, I think 1.0 players will be around next year. At the very most it'll be the 1.1 players that'll be at $200.

1.1 is mandatory, and has been so since November of last year. If ANY new players come out now or next year, they MUST be 1.1 or better. The only way there will be 1.0 players next year is if they're still selling the exact same models that came out last summer.

I wonder what they'll price it at. $99 or less would attract a lot of people (even people like me who prefer standalones), but I highly doubt it will debut at $99, unless it doesn't come out until after Xmas or something.

I suspect they could get it out before Xmas though. They've already got a lot of the code done, since it likely overlaps heavily with the HD DVD stuff. Of course, all that HDi stuff is useless for Blu-ray, but on the other hand the Blu-ray version is "just" Java, which MS is very familiar with of course.

$199.99 is too much for an add-on in 2008 IMO.
$149.99 I could see, but here's hoping for $99.99.

Leave it to Apple to come up with the obvious. You don't want people circumventing DRM to copy your movie? Then put a version of the movie designed to be copied and played on a computer.

You say that like it's a bad thing. As long as the discs main feature continue to play, offering lower profile machines at cheaper prices give consumer greater choice. I would think that many consumers would feel cheated if they had to pay extra for 2.0 hardware features while not having access broadband. There are still areas where people cannot even order broadband even if they wanted it or knew what it was.

I prediction that we will still see 1.1 profile devices long after 2.0 devices hit the market as not everyone will want the top end.

Actually I said it like it was a fact with no implication or opinion at all.

And as long as they clearly point out the differences I have no problems with any company selling the profiles they choose. But it's when they try and hide the fact that they are selling a 1.0 machine that it becomes a bad thing.

Not necessarily. The Family Guy thing was actually on a separate disc and not on the same disc as the movie. So it seems likely that they would just include a separate disc with the Blu-ray release to make it usable on as many computers as possible.

Correct. This is how all the Fox Blu-ray films are released with managed copy.

Roxio Announces Toast 9 for Mac OS X

No idea why they charge $20 for the Blu-ray plugin. They do support burning of HD media to DVD to playback now on Blu-ray players.

It was Apple's idea. They've been talking about this for years, and we first heard about Apple's desire for this back in early 2006 IIRC. Then Fox finally went with it recently.

Fair enough. As long as it is communicated to the customer that discs will play but with a reduced feature set on the older/cheaper players. But this is responsibility of the retailer to do their job properly.

I'd expect the CE's and retailers to try to up sell people to the players with "bonus view" (PiP) and eventually to 2.0's online features.

Yeah, just a little lens flare. And for that I bought a "closeout" HD-DVD player. Just for that lens flare. It's the cowbell of visual effects you know.

Toshiba faces 986 million dollar loss on HD-DVDs

We told you so! So many times BD supporters told HD DVD supporters that their "cheap" HD DVD players were being sold below cost but you called us liars and FUDsters. The Blu-ray insiders knew how much the hardware would cost even on the HD DVD side.

A loss of almost a billion on sales of 700,000 standalone players globally is proof that they were selling players at a loss for most of the format war.

To expect to buy a High Def player at this early stage for under 200 while not on sale is an unrealistic expectation.

Well Sony did sell approximately 14X more PS3s than Toshiba sold of HD DVD standalone players worldwide so economies of scale are kicking in for Sony now.
