i recently purchased green day's new album from itunes. after i purchased it i noticed about half the songs are 2 songs combined. example, song 3 & 4 from the cd are itunes track 3, played one after the other. this is how it is listed on itunes, i just never figured they would do something like that.

so my question is, is there any way to break up one itunes file into 2 separate song files, the way it should have been in the first place?
power mac g5 - dual 1.8ghz, 1.5gb, 250gb & 160gb, x800 xt, pioneer dvr-108, 10.4

You'd have to get around the copy protection to do this. If memory serves, the usual method of doing so is to burn the songs in question to an audio CD, then re-rip them from the CD. Then you could spilt the file into two distinct songs using QuickTime Pro.
Good Luck!

I thought that the copy protection on the Music Store files somehow makes doing this (burning and re-ripping) result in a dramatic loss of quality.

There's nothing special about the DRM that does this, it's merely a symptom of applying lossy compression to something that has already been lossy-compressed.

I'd suggest something like hymn for taking care of the DRM.

If you think songs are erroneously combined I would suggest you contact iTMS support and ask they can provide you with a correctly ripped version of the album.

Until then you could try to duplicate the songs and set the end time in iTunes earlier in one copy and the start time in the other later.

Another temporary, non-elegant solution is to use Wiretap to record the song (be careful not to play with the volume buttons as you will hear the quack sound it makes in the recording).

I don't know if it supports .m4p files, but Audion can split files like that.
I bring order to chaos. You are in chaos windows, you are the contradiction, a bug wishing to be an OS.
