I have an original cinema display that is on its last leg (If I had known it would only last this long I wouldn't have paid $4000 FOR IT!). Time for a new one - but I don't want to get a new cinema and have new ones come out in a week!

I think Apple is just focusing on music now. I'm giving up on any hope of new desktops or displays.

Usually Apple lets the channel dry up before releasing new products, but there are plenty of displays out there now... it doesn't seem like any new ones are coming anytime soon.

LCDs just don't last like CRTs. 2 to 3 years max. Then they have begun to suck beyond what can be tolerated. If they aren't dead that is.

Yea, I've been waiting for the new updated displays for a long time! I'm ready to order a new updated 23inch display, but they are taking forever!

I don't think that Apple's going to upgrade their displays soon at all.

What do you mean by suck? Do dead or stuck pixels develop after a few years?

I'm also planning on going LCD after the next refresh, unless someone here gives me a reason not to.

Next week, if not then, then the following week pending no big software bugs are found in the GUI and further optimization and debug code can be done...wait...

Explain why my iBook screen still works well after 3.5 years. I've seen plenty of older LCD screens that still work fine.

i want apple to release the 17" widescreen imac / powerbook monitor. 20 or 23" monitor would be cool, but i can't spend that much on a monitor. the 17" would be awesome!

I was losing my eyesight back in the CRT days. Now my eyesight is perfect after two years with nothing but LCDs.

I actually didn't notice anything was wrong with my Cinema Display until I put a powerbook right next to it. The powerbook (a new one) is almost twice as bright.

I certainly hope that you are correct. I purchased a Studio Display CRT September 1st 2000. The tube went out on me last month, the repair was $699. So I purchased a new 17" Cinema Display, hoping that it will last longer.

Apple Displays are not that good in my opinion, they are overpriced and people shouldn't you wait for updates they should instead buy a cheaper alternative. I'm all for Apple hardware but the displays are just not worth it.

There are better displays, for a features price ratio they are outclassed. You cannot even adjust the height on them, you just fold out the stand and thats it. A screen tha can move is prett basic and even this is left out.

My 15 inch Apple LCD is just as bight as the day I bought it. I use it about 5-8 hours a day.

LCDs tend to lose brightness over time, but unless they are on all the time, should provide more than reasonable use for years.

My Powerbook G4 is about a year old, and I use it at half brightness most of the time, since any higher than that is too bright for me. Then my 20" Cinema is pretty much the same case. It's a year old on March 8th, and the backlight on it is still strong.

Heck, my PowerBook 540c screen is still more than useable (about a quarter as bright as the G4 screen gets) and it's about 10 years old.

agreed.

i think apple 'makes' nice LCDs but the prices are obscene!

EDU discount:

#1 DELL UltraSharp 1703FP 17-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand $485

#2 17" apple LCD $595

quality differnec IMO: none
aesthtic difference is obvious, but personnaly i think the huge a$$ white borders around apple LCDs are ugly and a waste of space.

The backlight fades slowly with time. My iBook is 2 years old and it is looks half as dim as my dad's new PB. It fades until you can't really use it any more. I don't know if backlights can be changed.

Well, not to jump on the new display bandwagon, Apple no longer has a section in the refurb part of their site for displays. Even when they didn't have any displays, they where still listed....now they're gone... I'm looking for a new LCD myself and hope that apple dumps the 17" Studio Display in favor of a 17" Cinema. Widescreen is great, but we don't all have 1200 to spend on the 20".

If you have time you can actually replace the backlight bulbs but it's not the best of things.
