I'm selling an ibook on ebay and a customer would like me to send him the serial number from the side of the box so he can verify the warranty with apple.

Is it safe to send that? Can he possibly use that information to do anything bad?

I don't think so, though I'm not certain.

I'm not sure if Apple will do what he wants to do, though!

You can give the buyer the serial number and not worry. The only thing he could do with it is get the address or any owner that has registered the computer but he could do that through eBay if he really wanted to. What he probably is going to do is use something like GSX (global service exchange, apples web based service site for warranty/service providers) to verify the specs and the warranty expiration date according to Apple. It should be fine...

Technically, he could use your serial number to replace parts on his machine, but he would have to have access to ordering parts at an apple certified service center. If he had this access, he would also have access to a pool of serial numbers.

Therefore, I would say it's not likely anything bad would come of this.

Maybe he/she would like to buy AppleCare for the iBook, so he/she would need the serial number.
