Now that my Lombards G3/333MHz processor card is known to be defective, and with Apple not likely to start a repair program for this anytime soon, I need a new processor card.

Should I :

a) buy a third party G4 processor card , (what brand/what speed) or

b) buy a 2nd hand Apple PB G3 processor card?

If I do (b), could I put in a 400MHz processor card, or should I stick with getting another 333MHz card?

(B) will work.
a 400 mhz card will be fine.

Also, both <a href="http://www.powerlogix.com" target="_blank">http://www.powerlogix.com</a> and <a href="http://www.sonnettech.com" target="_blank">http://www.sonnettech.com</a> have G4/400 and G4/500 upgrades.

I've had good luck with sonnet in the past, but powerlogix has had their upgrade out longer.

Does anyone think the upgrades for lombards will go higher than 500mhz? I have 400 and its hard to justify spending that much money if something better is going to come out.

You should be able to replace your 333 cheaply. Ebay has them all the time. Just input "Powerbook Processor" on the search. It seems to me that they've gone for around 100 dollars.
