Has it occurred to the Americans here that they might be as "brainwashed" as their old Communist counterparts? Two sides of the same coin?

Oprah just came on the TV here in Australia with "What Makes America Great for You", which I find ridiculous. Interviewing refugees about why they love America. Ewww. I may be a diabetic before it's over - sugar overload. Perhaps they should ask the 1/3 of homeless people over there that are war veterans "What Makes America Great for You". Happiness is a warm dumpster.

Stay tuned for the "What Makes America Great for You" TV channel. 24-hour patriotism.

Most Americans see this shit and realize what it is, i.e.. constitution being flushed down the toilet (for chris_h). Unfortunately people south of the mason dixie line elected this knob. He does not represent this country, he represents the interest of big business. Relax, members of the EU, this nightmare will be over soon enough. Hopefully, I won't be labeled a terrorist and locked in a cage without a lawyer for posting this. Bush doesn't represent what Americans think, just some of them with tangled DNA.

Actually, this is what I've found out through these forums:

We get a lot of US TV down here (~40%) and so I grew up with Happy Days, etc. I always assumed you guys were just like me (or maybe I was just like you, huh?).

Anyway, since starting to post here I've found out that Americans are vastly different in their attitudes towards a huge range of things. Sometimes you guys scare me with your attitudes. There is something there that goes beyond patriotism. I think some of you guys are just as bad as flag waving Communists in your deep held belief that the US can do no wrong.

everyone is brainwashed. why do customs exist? its something impoesed upon us by who knows what. youre brought up to think, act, and react a certain way. you can oppose that but then youre just the other side of the same coin. society creates the norms and values we follow but it also creates the other side of the coin. were all brainwashed. i think a bigger a culture or society is, the more brainwashing occurs to hold that society together.

There were a few good things to come out of Australia. I remember the Paul Hogan show (before he became "Crocodile Dundee"). I also enjoyed the movie "Muriels Wedding" and I believe the first "Mad Max/Road Warrior" flicks were filmed in Australia. Okay I'm just kidding, hope you Aussie's know that. Besides any country where women outnumber men can't be all bad. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> But I know where I'm vacationing if I need a good "Shiela" or 3 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

As far as "brainwashing" goes. It still takes a certain degree of willing participation to be brainwashed. I'm ex Navy and I used to ponder this very point alot. Did the US Military "brainwash" me? Did they "mess with my head"? If so, have I sufferred some irreparaple "damage" due to that?

The real answer is they didn't do anything to me that I didnt allow them to do. Maybe if I was drafted instead of volunteering I might feel differently. Indeed I may have some resentment against my own government. But I chose to serve, so I also chose to deal with the tests of willpower that go along with that.

Anyway, yeah, the U.S.A. bashings get more stinky and old every day they're posted here. Sadly if we ever had anything to say about any other country we'd be labelled as "arrogant americans"

And don't just sit back, relax, and soon this nightmare will be over. That kind of ennui and lethargy is exactly the kind of thing that will make this nightmare go on and on. Americans- start marching in the streets if you don't agree with what your government is doing. Vote, damn it! Do _something_ to change the status quo.

Seriously, there is no single "American View." We're a pretty diverse bunch.

I promise not to base my view of Australia on Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson, and Paul Hogan if you promise not to base your view of Americans on Oprah and the dozen or so who bother arguing about these things at MacNN.

Come visit sometime, you'll see every extreme here. Rich, Poor, Oppressed, Liberated, etc, etc.
