Without saying what company you work for, I'd be interested to know how many levels of management there are between you and the CEO/Pres/Big Cheese. Also if you are a manager, how many layers below you until someone who has nobody reporting to them.

I have 9 levels between me and the CEO.

Nobody below me.

On large-scale film productions I got to:

Exec. Producer
Producer
Director of Photography
Gaffer <---
Best Boy Electric
Electrician
...
Production Assistant

The ellipsis is the transition from unskilled to skilled labor.

Mostly depends on size of company.
My experience is from manufacturing / automotive.

Current company, $850M revenue:

CEO
VP
Directors
Managers
Supervisors
Worker bees

So, 4 layers between. We're actually pretty lean in that regard.

Previous company ($50B) was more like this:

CEO
Division CEO
Executive VP
VP
(Sr. Directors)
Directors
Managers
(Sr. Managers)
Supervisors
Group Leaders
Worker bees

I report to a Techno Line Manager, a Service Manager, an Engagement Manager and a Practice Manager. But the Practice Manager is the official hierarchical manager. The Engagement Manager is also my Career Manager.

I was in a large meeting a few months ago and everyone gave their titles. I said mine "Oracle DBA" and someone responded "Well at least everyone understands what Matt does".

If it took four people to manage me, I think I'd be fired.

The only difference between them is the split between Excel and PowerPoint usage. The Service Manager can make overdue, overspent, non-functional projects look good in PowerPoint.

President
Division VP, Worldwide
Manager, Regional
Team Leader
Engineer <--

The "Team Leader" position was just introduced last year and has proven to be very effective in ensuring the guy doing my performance review has no idea what my performance is, and also that there is a large delay in getting my expense reports approved.

3 layers of Gov't managers
7 layers of contractor
4 layers of sub contractors - I'm on the bottom rung, but I get to mostly call my own shots.
