If you've read my previous post you've seen that I've been trying to decide what kind of mac to get. I've got my eye one the iMAC 1.8 17" with a gig of RAM. I've heard many problems with the iMAC. Can anyone offer advice to either encourage or discourage the buying of an iMAC? Thanks.

It seems the problems on here are blown way out of proportion. I just received my new 1.8 iMac, and it's flawless.

In true MacNN tradition, I'd just like to point out it's "Mac" not "MAC."

I bought a new version iMac and it already had leaking capacitors before I'd even turned the damned thing on so I returned it for a refund. I've bought an iMac G4 instead. I think the iMac G5 is big step back design-wise, and is inherently flawed internally. In 2-3 years time I can see Apple having a major problem on it's hands.

Got the 20" here at work. The superdrive and mouse were busted right out of the box.
2 weeks later Apple still doesn't have the part to fix it.

I have a 20" 2.0Ghz iMac just purchased last month (May 2005). No issues. A beautiful machine! Today FedEx delivered my new Dual 2.5 PM and yesterday they delivered my new 23" ACD. Too bad I'm working the whole weekend. :-(

SO, what I'm gathering out of this is all of us who plan on buying an imac are just going to have to play a game of chance? I really want to give the imac a chance, but at the same time I don't want to get something that's not going to work or have something busted right out of the box. I really do appreciate all the help. Thanks

I paid for AppleCare because of the potential for problems further down the line, but when it turned up with a leaking cap already I just instinctively knew that it had to go, and that I should exploit the 14 day return policy. It had taken over 3 weeks to arrive too. I can't wait for my lovely iMac G4 to arrive next week

In the same sense that buying anything is a game of chance, yes. There is always the possibility of problems with any purchase. Most iMacs are fine.

That's what it seems like reading these forums, but the problems are blown WAY out of proportion here. You don't see any threads titled "My iMac is great!" because most people come here for support with their problems.
Is there a *chance* that you'll have a problem? Of course there is, but it's a very small chance.

Just to add to the number of satisfied iMac G5 owners, I have the 2.0 20" iMac and so far it has had zero problems and is a wonderful machine.
But I did purchase applecare just in case . I usually buy new computers every 4-5 years, so "taking the chance" so to speak was okay for me.

My 1.8 17" rocks. No problems.
I think going back to a G4 iMac due to fear of having a bad iMac G5 is totally insane. The G4 is already yesterday's machine (Circa mid-2003).
Buy the MUCH faster machine with AppleCare, and sleep easy. I've fixed many, many iMac G4s in my day too. Even the last ones MLBs are prone to failure.
