I've been trying to get xwindows using sourceforge's xonx and xfree86 4.0.2 working, and after making the following files:

a .cshrc file in /Users/sirion as well as the home dir of root:
setenv PATH "${PATH}:/usr/X11R6/bin"
setenv MANPATH "${MANPATH}:/usr/X11R6/man:/usr/local/man"

a .login file in /Users/sirion :
set path = ( $path /usr/X11R6/bin )

and a .xinitrc file in /Users/sirion :
xterm &
xclock &
twm

I rehashed both the .xinitrc file and the .cshrc file.

After hitting startx, the screen turns black with my cursor active, waits a few seconds, then goes back to aqua and the following is left on my terminal:

[localhost:~] sirion% startx -- -quartz -fakebuttons

Running in parallel with Mac OS X Quartz window server.

I don't know why it would matter, but you created two extra files (.login, root .cshrc) that I did not in following the howto at
http://hometown.aol.com/tg3907/osx.html

Mine works fine.
