My request is simple: I'm working on a GPLed OS X app called Paintbrush which is meant to be analogous to Microsoft Paint. I finally released version 0.1 the other day as an alpha release. Check it out at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/paintbrush

Shameless self-plugging aside, you'll notice that there's one significant flaw with my program: it is 100% devoid of any icons/images/etc. Turns out I'm an abysmal icon designer...

Which is where you come in! I'm looking for someone who'd be willing to design a basic set of icons for my app. They would have to be released under an open license (eg Creative Commons). No pay, of course, but you'd get the #2 spot in the credits. In short, my request includes (but is not necessarily limited to):

- An app icon
- A disk image icon that features the aforementioned app icon
- Approximately 10-12 26x26px icons to be used in the program itself

If you're interested, let me know (either in this thread, or via a PM). Thanks!

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

Honestly, that's a good sized icon design project, especially not just done and thrown together for free. You're bound to catch hell from the older designers/art directors/folk here asking for something like this to be done for free. Best of luck to you, truly, but fair warning—my Spidey 'NN senses a thread meltdown.

After seeing the menu palette of your app, I definitely agree it could use some icons.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be offensive at all. I honestly don't know how much effort would go into something along these lines, and figured that it wouldn't hurt to ask. I guess that's the problem with open source: either someone has to come forward and volunteer out of the goodness of their heart, or the primary developer has to foot the bills.

Maybe you could find some icons you like that are already released, and then approach the designer for his permission to use them. Otherwise, maybe you will have to buy one of those application icons packs that several websites have on sale (iconfactory.com etc.).

Yeah, that's probably my best bet.

I'm interested because I don't know C, C++ or Objective-C and would like someone to code a freeware game (to tie in with a music video project) for which I'll do the graphics and other multimedia. So if anyone wants some design and video done in exchange for coding I am here!!!

I don't find it offensive at all, and I totally understand this situation when it comes to open source developing; the issue's come up before. But I know there are those who would love to rip into you about the value of the designer's work, the time/effort required, how you shouldn't "take advantage" of young designers, and so on, and so on. But it seems civil so far, so forget I mentioned it!

There are a lot of great icon designers out there today; someone's bound to help out, if only to help get their name out there on a piece of open source software. While some may see this as some "evil-doing" on your part, I think this is a great opportunity for some designers. I sympathize with you open source guys, really.

Sorry, I have that image copyrighted/registered from back in 1st grade. I do accept PayPal if you are interested in obtaining a full license for this artwork though.

He advertises on his homepage that he will do free or charge half his price for open source projects.

That looks very promising, thanks! I have one person I'm currently contacting for rights to an app icon, so I'll wait and see how that turns out first.
