I'm going to purchase a new 20" iMac G5 and noticed that Apple has an offer to get a free iPod mini after mail-in rebate with the purchase of a Mac. Since the mini is discontinued, does this offer now apply to the same priced iPod nano?

It just says any iPod doesn't it?

We had Apple people here when school started and they explained it to us as just being a $179 rebate for any iPod.

The fine print also makes it clear that only certain computers qualify as well. For example, you can't get a Mac Mini and an iPod Mini on this program. The Mac Mini just doesn't qualify, period. Always read the fine print...

I asked this because I didn't see the iPod mini at the online Apple Store, but now I see a link to where you could purchase the mini on the offer page I linked to.

I guess I answered my own question

no
you CAN use it for the nano

if u so choose, you can take the 179, and apply it to any ipod. it's not free, but it's the student price of a 4gb ipod mini.

That's because the fine print was released months ago, whereas the Nano is less than a week old. They just haven't updated it yet.

And they're under no obligation to update it! Unless you have a rebate slip explicitly including the four nano part numbers, you can expect for the rebate to be denied.

I called Apple today, and they said that the Nano does not qualify, since the offer was made before the Nano was released. Bummer!

Apple told me the same thing. Buy a Nano and a machine and you are out of luck. No rebate for the Nano.

Allow me to confirm this. The nano does not qualify for the mail-in-rebate, but it does qualify for the student discount.

The Nano is listed in the Educational page with a discounted (by $20) price, so it does qualify for a student discount. But since its part number isn't on the rebate form, it does NOT qualify for the rebate. Almost all of Apple's computers are on the Educational page, though only some of them qualify for that rebate... It's their backyard, so they can pick and choose.

Get a mini, fill in the rebate, sell it on ebay. You will get the $179 for the rebate and $160+ for the mini on ebay. Get a nano for free and pocket some change.

Or keep the mini and have a much more sturdy device. I bought a nano and returned it today. Nice, but no outstanding. The flash memory is sweet, mind you, but I still prefer the mini...too bad we couldn't get a mini with a color screen.

Some people may be reluctant to buy it since you have to cut off the UPC code and serial.

More sturdy than the nano? It's flash based, not a hard drive. Your mini is giving out before the nano, and it does photos, and more. I'd rather have the nano.

Good luck getting any Mac with a mini from the Apple education store to get this rebate.

Since you MUST buy both the mini and the Mac from Apple on the SAME receipt, and Apple is no longer selling minis (refurbs don't count), you cannot take advantage of this offer.

Maybe if you call them live?

I bought a nano and returned it. Just a few minutes in my pocket and WOW, sratches galore. Set it down on a desk...scratches. The scratches are very noticeable. Yes, I read the article on ars technica about how tough it is. I will give it credit.

Wow. If I end up getting a Nano, the first thing I'll do will be to get a case for it. And never let it out of there.

With the release of the Nano, Apple's promotion seemed to me like a good way to get rid of excess stock. Ah well. Student discounts are always good, even though rebates are better.

Not true. If you look at the web page for the special offer (I can't link to it, since it'll expire, but enter an edu store, click "see all promotions" near the bottom, and then click the offer) it has links to the iPod mini. You can even still get the engraving.
